Gretsch, Rogers, Ludwig/WFL black fur Vintage

Loading...

Well I came across some furry black drums someone thought it was a good idea to do this to these great drums. I am going to save these and will make a Frankenstein kit with them. I still can't believe what is under this black paint and fur. How can anyone even think about doing this. Need help with the Gretsch Bass drum.

1. Age if possible?

2. pics of shell and badge.

3. under paint was White Pearl wrap (some Damage) Size 14X26 with what looks like 3ply and solid rerings.

4. no legs. Would it use the 8807 spurs?

5. I would think this is rare size any info would be great.

Last but not least.

This drum was also painted black and is almost finished being cleaned up.

Rogers 16 x 18 floor tom

script badge , 4 legs

Thanks for looking and any info you might have.

The final set will be:

6.5 x 15 NOB 1920 Ludwig snare

14 X 26 Gretsch bass drumm

16 x 16 Slingerland 1930's radio king floor

16 x 18 Rogers floor tom

and looking for a suggestion for rack tom, maybe something in 10 x 14, 12 x 14 size that would round it out.

Thanks

The ludwig is can you say Beatles. I always say musicians and extra time on their hands is not a good thing in alot of instances.

Your drummers not much good is he!? What you need is someone that's as good as me. ! John Henry Bonham !!

First, congrats on successfully removing the fur (PETA will be happy). Second, congrats on discovering some really great drums. Yah, uncovering Oyster Black Pearl wrap on a Ludwig bass is always a welcome sight, but I'm drooling over that 26" WMP Gretsch bass. The placement of the vent hole and badge shows this was not a marcher; it was made for a set, and that size would have been popular for Big Band/Swing. I had an earlier Gretsch WMP bass (1946) and it had the Rocket lugs (and the 8807 clamp-on spurs). The Gretsch experts should be able to estimate the date of your bass.

Oh, and that Rogers 18" FT is a nice find also! Thanks for sharing and keep us updated on the clean-up.

I almost had those. I paid and everything, just me and the seller couldn't meet up. So I got my money back. Congrats on the score and the project. Some good shells in there.

Only difference was he said he was gonna keep the Gretsch and not add it in. Glad someone was able to get and clean it!

Thanks for the replies.

Vintagemore2000, I here you on that but if I had extra time with these drums I would of played them.

Mike thanks for the reply, You hit it right on the head my main reason I grabbed them was for those two drums , the rest was a bonus. I will probably move over to the restoration page once I get things going. So you are thinking late 40's on the Bass drum?

Hi Jay, yes he was hard to get a hold of but finally hooked up and when I did he didn't want to part with either the Gretsch or the Rogers. Must of caught him on an off day, I talked him into keeping another Rogers 18 inch shell and a Rogers 22 inch bass drum and he threw in the rest. Have a few cymbal stands also.

I have a MIJ shell ( looks like to me) that is uncovering to be a gold sparkle. I will post in sales if someone is interested, still not sure what I am going to do with the club date Oyster black pearl yet, also have the 22 inch Gretsch shell and a snare shell that haven't figured out who it is made by. (wood with rerings, thin) and 2 concert tom shells.

Jay sorry that it didn't work out but if you were interested in any of those let me know if I can help out.

Was the black paint water based? What did you use as a stripper?
