I found the following badge and it's on feebay now.* Went to the vsd web page for badges and I didn't see this one with the top edge crown on it.* Looks factory made. *Does this badge date the drum it came from?* Which years was it used?

It`s damaged and the grommet does not belong. The round badge was held in place with a common furniture tack.

It`s a drum,.....Hit It !!

When looking at the three round badges all three are different diameter and two have the thin stick and one has the thick stick.

That one has the thick stick.

OddBall, Thanks for the reply. We are making progress with it on the dfo. I just added a pic of the inner tag. The right Gretsch guy is on the case. Thanks!

That's a bass drum badge, The nickel grommet is correct and they were press fitted into the holes on bass drums. They did not go all the way into the interior of the drum and were not crimped over in any way. Since it was nothing but a friction fit they had a tendancy to fall out. Therefore there are a lot of Gretsch bass drums missing their badges and vintage replacements, complete with that larger grommet, can bring a pretty penny.

As I stated over at the DFO I think the fluting along the edge of the badge is simply a manufacturing error. I have never seen another like that, nor has Rick, who is literally the guy who wrote the book on Gretsch round badges.

I wrote a short paper looking at the differences and dates of use of seven different variations of the Gretsch round badge. A summary is here and there is a link to the whole paper as well. ( http://www.gretschdrumdatingguide.com/gretsch-projects.html )

Based upon the serial number, this the drum it was on was from the 1964-1965 time frame. This assumes that my theory on the use of serial numbers by Gretsch provides a reasonable basis for date estimation.

Collecting information about the following for ongoing research projects:
Gretsch drums with serial numbers,
Ludwig Keystone and B/O badge drums with serial numbers and date stamps,
Ludwig Standards from 1968-73, and
Ludwigs with paper labels from 1971-72
