Early 70's 4165 (10 lug) owner chiming in, actually it's my son's ...
This snare is crazy amazing! His currently has an Evans Power Center Reverse Dot on the top and an Evans Hazy 300 on the bottom with Puresound Super 30 wires. This combination gives it a wood sounding pop when you hit it dead center and that brassy crack when hit slightly off center. If you a looking for more of a metallic sound, then get a single ply head like an Evans G1 or a Remo Ambassador. The rim shots are just insane with those cast hoops. This drum is loud and proud and can easily over power the rest of the kit, so adjust your playing accordingly. Ghost notes are a treat with the Puresound Super 30's adjusted a little on the loose side. The brass shell, cast hoops, 8 or 10 cast lugs, cast Lightning Throw-off and the cast Fishtail butt plate make this a very heavy snare. I'm guessing two, maybe three, Supra's would get you close to the weight of one 4160/4165.
No regrets getting this snare.

the only snare i play is my gretsch 60's 4108. its an 8 lug w/ renown throw, but an aluminum spun shell. its AMAZING. i will use it til i die
