been thinking about this pedal all evening and would like to give my :2Cents: on the Ludwig Speed King.

i've read alot of the posts you guys have done on the sk and seen pictures but i didn't know what their were until i pulled mine out of the box and held it in my hands then i remembered my uncle alan useing a sk for many years when i was younger. i guess it's been a while since i seen one i forgot about them, anyway.....

i really like this pedal and i think it is a pedal that could easily be used by any drummer, from the beginner to the pro and even the old ****s, lol. as a beginner... i diffenently recommend it to all beginners because they feel so natural under your foot and your not working yourself to death to get a good bass sound going on with a good stedy and smooth beat and keeping the beat. so if any of you have never tried one, give it a shot, you will like it. pm Purdy Shuffle, bfulton or even myself and hopefully we can set ya up with one.

so that's my thoughts for now. buy a speed king and become a real drummer. lol.

spent some more time with the sk today, played a few songs (and still liking it pretty good) then set it up on the bench to look it over and get familular with it which has brought up some questions.

1. what kind of maintance does this pedal need?

2. does it require special care?

3. how does this design work, and what makes it work the way it does.

The one I sent you is just like new. It won't need any "maintenance" for quite a long while. Bill Fulton, the guy that refurbished that pedal does an amazing and a very thorough job of rebuilding those pedals from the ground up. It's lubricated, all the internal and outer parts are 'squeaklessly' clean and it plays like a dream. No effort at all. You don't ever have to stomp on a Speed King. A tap of the toe is all it takes to activate it.

2. does it require special care?

Not a good idea to leave it out in the shed where temps and humidity fluctuate too much over winter. Anyplace that keeps dry is a good environment. A few years down the road it 'may' need some lube, but that's like I said - years away. Clean and dry, it'll last forever. The one you have is already 50+ years old! DO NOT REMOVE THE SCREW CAPS AT THE BASE OF THE POSTS! There is lubricant, springs, ball bearings and pistons in there. Let it be. I adjusted that pedal myself. It's ready to rock. No muss, no fuss.

Funny you should say that Robyn.I felt the same way,after I goy my first Speed King.They are like the supraphonic of bass drum pedals,and Ludwig sold more of them(even to guys who didn't play Ludwig drums) then any other company,ever.

I still use one today after some odd *% years.

I'm sure John made sure it was in tip top shape,before shipping it.Enjoy a piece of history.
