Gene Krupa grew up not far from where my wife grew up, and where she lived when we met. My wife graduated from Bowen High School in Chicago. She says that there was at least one desk with Krupa's name carved into the wood. I found this listing while googling for Krupa information.

I played a few nights in the early 70's at a neighborhood bar on Chicago's far South side in a mostly Polish neighborhood alterntely known as The East Side or The Bush. This was the neighborhood where GK was born and raised. The bar had a nice stage and a dance floor. It was named Krupa's, and owned by Gene's family. The bar is still there under the name of Krupa's Tavern owned by John Krupa, jr.
