I titled this garage find cause this was sitting on a guys garage floor when he opened the door.
Here's the story. I went to Mississauga to pick up some small classic Ludwig lugs that I bought on ebay. The seller was a guy I've bought from before and he lived about 20mins away so I thought I'd save myself the shipping and go pick them up personally. Well I'm glad I did.
Wonder guy to deal with. He gave me the lugs which were exactly as he described in the auction. Almost mint. We got to chatting a bit and he asked me If there was anything else I was looking for. I asked him if he had an 18 X 16 B/O Badge Floor Tom which he said no but he had a 22 X 14 70's B/O Badge Bass Drum shell in Black Diamond Pearl. He said it's in the garage come and check it out. He opened the door and there it was.
22" X 14" Ludwig BDP Bass Drum Shell, Drilled for 20 large classic lugs, 5/16" slide out spurs and Rail Consolette. The wrap is original and as you can see from the pics is lifting quite a bit at the seems. The shell is surprising round. He dropped a 22" head on it and It fit perfectly.
The only down side is there are six extra holes in it. Some idiot (NOT ME) drilled two extra holes to relocate the rail consolette to the center of the bass drum. they also drilled holes in 2 spots to the left of the badge for a tom mount. I hate it when people do S^&t like this to classic drums. Other than that the shell is in great shape for it's age.
The wrap is still in good shape too. It has some scratches and 1 or 2 splits along the bottom but it's still very shiny and hasn't faded too much.
The noodle scratcher is the resa-cote finish on the inside of the shell. I thought at first someone painted it but it looks original and there is NO date stamp.
So here's my question. Did Ludwig in the very early 70's use shells that had a resa-cote finish on them that were left overs from the sixties????.
If they did does that make this one rare.?????
Oh!! I forgot I paid $20.00 for it.
