For sale: Slingerland Student Model Radio King in Marine Pearl wrap. Badge dates the drum to late 1950’s (1956-1959).
The Shell: The 3ply shell is in really nice condition and in round. Nice bearing edges, deep snare beds. Re-rings are fully intact. This is the 7” model but actually measures about 6 7/8”.
Wrap Finish: is in nice condition…no cracks, chips, gouges. There are a few areas of surface spotting you can see in the pictures like something was spilled or splattered…I think this would clean up with Novus or similar cleaning. I have also removed one lug to illustrate the mellowing of the marine pearl.
Hardware:
•8 nickel plated lugs, tension rods and clips, snare butt, and dial muffler. The batter side single flange hoop is nickel plated brass and is a little bent but appears to be in-round and still useable. The snare side single flange hoop was replaced at some point with the current chrome plated brass. This hoop is out of round but could probably be made useable with the right “know-how”.
•The snare throw is nonexistent. The drum originally came equipped with a 3-point throw but I believe was replaced at some point with a Ludwig P83/P85 as there is one extra hole and it lines up with a P85.
•The badge is intact. It’s scratched and has a few small bends in it (see picture) maybe from someone trying to remove it at some point…who knows?
This has the potential to be a really nice vintage players drum with minimal work especially if you have access to a Slingy 3point throw or even a Ludwig P83/P85 throw. The 3ply deep-dish shell will give you that nice fat and woody vintage tone. You could even throw on some stick-saver hoops and play it that way!
