Flat area on bottom of 60s Ludwig bass Last viewed: 1 hour ago

I have a 60s Ludwig kit that I got from a guy in NY, less than two years ago. I noticed there is a good sized flat spot on the bottom of the bass drum. I've managed to get heads on the bass drum without too much trouble, and it tunes up fine...sounds good.

Anyone else experience this? I thought about maybe just finding another bass drum at some point, but it seems to work okay.

Okay, I was probably worrying too much. Fortunately, it hasn't seemed to cause it to be out of round where heads can't go on. I guess as long as the heads go on fine and tunes up well, then I should be good. It's funny, I also have a trans badge kit of the same sizes, and that bass drum is in perfect shape! Sound wise, they're about the same though.

many Ludwig drums of that era have the famous flat spot

this is due to the way they included the wrap into the actual bend of the wood plies

if you look at the bearing edge you will see the wrap goes right into the plies

see it explained here starting at about :40
