A thread over at DFO got me thinking about my first drum set. After I started taking lessons at the school my parents found a set of Rogers used for $300 and bought it for me. After playing them for a few years I stupidly sold them to buy an electric set. Oh well, you live and learn! Anyway, I have no clue what these drums were. I tried to figure out what set they were from old Rogers catalogs online but I could not find a set that had the mounted concert toms. Any ideas from the Rogers guys on here?
First Drum Set - Rogers Identification
I posted my first kit over at DFO and will post here as well! It's a 1968 Lyra 4pc in Gold Sparkle. I loved that kit! The picture is from 1969, performing at a talent show with my brother on guitar. Those kids in front of me are either saying, "wow, what a cool drummer" or "that guy needs more practice"!! LoLoLoLo
As for your Rogers, I would say Big R era from about 1976-77. It was probably special ordered with concert toms instead of double-headed toms. Concert toms were all the rage during this time period!

I'm not a Rogers expert by any means but I think the lack of a serial number on the badge is of some significance. When the original Rogers went out of business the name and tooling was sold to another outfit (Island Music) who made drums that, initially anyway, were very similar in appearance to the regular Rogers Big R drums (The "Big R" badge and the memri-loc hardware were first introduced around 1976). IIRC those were actually imported drums but the badge still said "USA" on it (but lacked the space for the serial #).
If I'm remembering this all right then I'd guess you had a set from the mid 1980's Island Music Era. But I could well be wrong...as I say I'm no expert on Rogers (or anything really). If I'm right though you don't have to feel quite as bad about selling them off.
K.O.
I think you're right about not having serial numbers. I didn't catch that! I'm more familiar with pre-Big R Rogers!

The big R badges had no serial #'s in 79-80.
The imports never had USA on the labels.
The natural interiors would mean they were XP-8 shells.

Good to know!

DOH! I'm wrong as usual. I must have been mixing up the missing serial with the missing USA. All my Rogers are pre-Big R too.
Then again he might feel better about ditching an import set instead of some XP-8's.
Color... Platinum #195
First seen in the XP8 Craig Krampf Catalog, 1979. The First XP8 USA catalog.
Londoner V ordered with Concert Toms, an option for special order, and they were very popular.
1979-81 for the year. USA Rogers.
Top of the line when new.
Color is somewhat rare.

Thanks everyone! I am at peace with selling it. It served its purpose and I like to live with no regrets. I would be kicking myself if the snare was a Dynasonic but it was the cheapo R-360 steel snare (no loss there!). We ended up tripling the money we had in it when we sold it and it kept my interest in drumming by getting something new.
My First Drum Set.... turns 40 in November. I have owned it 38 years almost to the day it was purchased new. Still have it.
