You all should watch this documentary "I Like Killing Flies" from 2004. If you want to see how this restaruant is run. I was amazed the way they do business! I have/had 4 friends in there 80's, they were all a little rough. Nice people, my friends, but life at that point has a different meaning to them. He has been doing this for so long, he has become hardened to people in general. He can't close the place because that is all he knows in life. He makes his own rules and people need to follow them. He feels like he deserves it, right or wrong who is to say otherwise. He does not care at this point in life. He is waiting to die... It might not be the way you would expect business to be run, but I'm sure this guy can be a real pal if you just break through the rough exterior. After 10 years in retail, I could not take it anymore. It gets to anyone and I started making my own rules! We had a lot of wonderful customers that became friends, but the general public really takes it out of you. If I was close, I would be knocking on the door every day :) David

David, I may not even be close to that man's age, but I don't care if he's 18 or 80......or if HE thinks he deserves to be able to treat people that way.....you just don't treat people that way in a business situation, whether you're the owner or not, or for how long you've been in business. Amazing that he actually still has customers or that the resuraunt is still open. If people have done that to him after being in business so long, the he is long past the time he should have closed shop. Period. You state he's in his 80's and basically at this point in his life waiting to die? Tell him to do us all a favor then and pull the trigger and put himself out of his own misery, that way MY tax dollars aren't paying for his social security and medicare benefits anymore. DOH

Yes you can learn from your elders, but if the dude is that crusty and treats people like that, do us all a favor and end it! Nothing to learn from this guy but the fact that he's miserable that he's STILL alive.

I was there once. I was about 16 and with my dad. A bright eyed kid engulfed in drums. He was gruff to say the least. The store was divided into 2 parts, the counter side and the drum set side. He had a 2 x 4 across the entry to the drum side, and you had to ask to be let in to see them. We talked about what kind of drums I wanted and when I told him I wanted a set of Sonors, he asked why? He likened owning a set of Sonors to his friend who had a Porche. His friend always parked in a no parking zone and got tickets. He said his friend said this way he knew the cops were looking after his car. Why would I want a set I would be paranoid leaving in a bar? He then went on to tell me that most drummers can't tell the difference between drum brands anyway, that all you are paying for is a name. He went on to say that he bet I couldn't tell the difference between 3 drums, if they were all the same size, had the same heads, and I tuned all three of them because I was the one tuning them to what I wanted to hear.He also went on to talk about his friend that had recently passed, Buddy Rich. How MD used a horrible picture of him on the tribute issue. We also talked about Craig Kampf, a local guy and possibly (don't remember) former student, who had just played on his first major record. Some things stuck with me, some I've learned otherwise and some never set in. Good or bad, I will say it was a rather unique experience for this kid...

A 2x4 huh? Guess he couldn't see investing in a velvet rope!

After reading about your "unique experience" it still tells me to stay away from his shop. Also it makes sense that this guy would be a friend of Buddy Rich....he sounds very similar in fact! Buddy Rich=great drummer, not so great person to people in general (at least according to everything I've ever read about the man!) Thos kind of people attract each other....they all seem to get along well...:p

Hey LD

I understand your point, but people in their 80's have a different mind set. They feel they deserve a certain level of respect for getting there.

They are usually "Crotchety" to say the least. Not all 80 year old's, just the lonely ones that lost spouses and have no friends to speak of. I know, I have hung around them and spent time with them.

I might not agree with them, but I still do have a certain level of respect for them.

He can't change or close the store. That is what he is holding on to, he does not want change. Right or Wrong it does not matter to him. He does not care what anyone thinks. His age and mentality go hand in hand.

He has seen his spouse die, family die, friends die, maybe his kids die, and his community die, that also makes for a lonely person.

It is not time for business to die, with or without customers. He does not care.

His shop should be closed and he should not be dealing with the public. Yes, we have agreed to that, that is pretty evident.

I'm just explaining why I think he is the way he is.

When he does die, I wonder what's in place for the store and inventory.

I am sorry I started this thread, It wasn't meant to slam the man or his store. I had heard about this place and thought I would pass along my experience, hoping to read about others who had been there. Please don't pass judgement unless you have been there. Like I said, I will go back there.

Thanks David for saying what is hard for me to put into words.

Ahhh... Now that is funny... I have been called a BB many times!

No problem Lucky, this place has opinions, keeps things in the moment.

One of my older friends around 84 broke his ankle about a week or two ago. He called me twice today already.. I wonder if I will have any friends at 84

My Dad just turned 86 and he has more friends than I do. He still drives all over the place. Last year he and my sister drove up to Michigan from Houston to visit relatives. I'm pretty sure he is going to out live me. Anyways, at any age you should treat every one with respect and courtesy (until proven otherwise) however, when you start reaching those types of numbers, I can forgive some eccentricities. I think after all those years it's been earned.

I completely understand people in their 80's. My wife and I live with her grandmother because she has noone else, except for her 8 cats. It can be tricky sometimes, but we get along. She is 82. When she says something, I just have to keep in mind that she's 82 and doesn't really mean it. A mean spell only lasts a couple days. If I imagine her running a business, I could see how she would be like Mr. Faust. They can't help it, just let them be old.

I'm sorry, but the way I was brought up, this isn't right at any age. Letting them get away with it because they are over a certain age is complete crap. They know better but think they can get away with it because people use their age as the excuse to let them get away with it. And its seems to be the concensus here that it is ok for them to get away with it, which isn't right. Think about this....if a teenager tried it with you, you'd say it was "some snot nosed kid" right? So what's the difference if the guy was 85? He's still being a "snot nosed kid" even though its 70 some-odd years later! Double standard if you ask me. And using the fact that they are lucky to be around at "that age" and the like, and they lost their family, etc is not a valid excuse. I've lost just about everybody close to me over the past 6-years and I'm half the age of this guy. And I (for the most part, there are a few exceptions) don't treat people like that. Its bogus to say its ok because he's old. I'm sorry, but I don't agree with that theory of being able to treat people like that after you're over a certain age. Like the old addage says: "you have to earn respect, you just don't automatically get it." I say again, if the guy is that miserable and crotchety, then do yourself and the rest of us a favor...pull the trigger and get it over with!

I doubt his age has anything to do with his sales strategy. I'm probably a bigger grouch than this guy and I'm half his age. My beef was that it sounded like he didn't want to fool with you unless you "are ready to buy". So what's he going to do if you are ready to buy but he doesn't have anything you want; kick your ass for wasting his time? He doesn't even have a website so how are you supposed to know what he's got? Does he advertise anywhere? I'd like to know if he has any 70's Ludwig 3-ply 26" kick drums/sets...
