Preaching to the choir, Ogre. :) I typically prefer players' kits to showpieces. Although I do focus on aesthetics more than sound when considering a bass redo head. Finding that sweet spot of sound and look is a challenge.

Thanks for the feedback, I'll most likely be using an EMAD on my most recently acquired kit.

Vintage kits:
1969 Rogers Holiday - black diamond pearl (20/16/13/12)
196x Star (Lyra/Majestic) - blue sparkle pearl (22/14/13) Restoration Project
1987 Pearl KC-3500 - jet black (22/16/13/12)
Not-so-vintage kits:
2007 Hart Dynamics Professional 6.4 e-kit / Roland TDW-20
Snares:
60s Gretsch 5x14 maple WMP / 68 Ludwig 5x14 Supraphonic / 93 Pearl 3x14 Free Floating brass piccolo / 60s Star (Lyra) 5x14 luan blue sparkle pearl / 87 Pearl 6.5x14 steel

I have a couple of Walberg & Auge drum sets. The bass drums have internal tone controls (mufflers) that are large versions of the round felt pad internal tone controls for snare drums and toms. With the external knob/T-handle on the shell, I can dial in as little or as much muffling as I want to apply to the inside surface of the batter head.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

I wish it had this on my bass drum, I think thats basically the same as these external clip on mufflers I'm interested in, sounds like they'll do the thing.

My problem with EMAD's is that they mute all around the edge of the skin, which is where a lot of important overtones are, and which are pretty necessary for getting that older sound.

I've been thinking of getting an external muffler also. There do not seem to be too many new options but I did find these 2.
