Early DW snare... Last viewed: 4 hours ago

I'm curious about this drum. I don't know much about DW or their early shells. This seems to be quite undersized. Its in round...all measurements are the same... Are the newer DW shells as undersized to the same degree as the older ones were? Its a 6 digit serial #. 6X14"

IMO, the drum sounds fantastic.

Any help/information would be appreciated.

That's s cool drum. Serial no 100? I'm guessing it would most likely be a Keller maple shell.

I believe that my snares are about 13 7/8 , so maybe it's a little undersized, or is it slightly out of round?

I had a '76 supra that was at least 1/8-in out of round, but it sounded killer.

Serial number 100XXX. The drum is in round and closer to

13 13/16" and definitely a Keller shell. Its a bit of a weird angle on the photo showing measurement...

Early DW's were undersized on purpose and Keller made their shells with a nod to the LA Camco design. The 100 prefix SN would put it among the first generation of their snares, produced around 1980-81. I've owned the same drum and it was very nice indeed! The PIC below shows it with a set from the same time period.

FYI

Great looking set! Are the toms and bass drum on your set as undersized as the snare from that era? I read that they started out producing snare drums prior to making full sets.

Yes I've heard about the Camco connection and last night I read the article in NSMD about the early DW snare drum shells.

Thanks

Yes, all the drum shells were slightly undersized to get a "floating head" effect.

The full sets were started around the same time but only on a special order basis. The pictured set was ordered in the Summer of 1981 and received in the Fall of that year. According to DW, they were making fewer than a dozen sets per year in those days.

Never play it the same way once.
