Early 1920s Thumb-Rod Snare

Loading...

Some snares I “collect” to play, some are just for display. I recently bought this Ludwig Thumb-Rod Drum for the latter purpose. It was in amazingly good shape when I got it…all there and unmolested, including calf skin heads. I cleaned all the hardware and put a couple coats of MinWax furniture wax on the shell. Like the 1922 Ludwig catalog (page 14) says it, “has a shell substantially finished inside and out”. The inside is smooth and lacquered just like the outside. The Ludwig and Ludwig logo is “branded” on the inside of the 5”X14” shell. A really pretty addition to my collection.

It's a beauty!

Why wouldn't you play it? I would. Share the love!

I didn't mean to imply that I absolutely will not play it. It's just that that is not why I bought it and I have several other snares which I would choose to play first.
