I started on a 66 Rogers 20-12-14 with matching snare with a broken K stamp Zildjian and a set of A Zildjian New Beat hats. Got to play with those for two years. Learned a lot.

My first purchase in 1979 was a 1977 Rogers six piece Big R 24-13-14-15-18 with COB Dynasonic, Paiste 2oo2 Cymbals, Hardware and Cases. I paid 950.00. The cymbals are gone, sold, not broken, after owning them for 25 years. The drums today exist as a 24, 13, 16, 18. And, I still own the snare drum+ a few more.

And I purchased a 66 Rogers 20-12-14-16 with matching Powertone in the same color as that first set back in '03 that is a whole lot of fun to play.

I still have 2oo2 Paiste cymbals too. And K Customs.

I started out drum-life playing on the seat cushions of my parent's vinyl kitchen set. Man, I ripped those seats to shreds practicing. My mother convinced my father to buy me some drums before I destroyed anything else. My first kit was a WMP Kent kit. 12", 16", 22" w/Kent 6-lug snare. One year later I sold them and used the $ to buy my first (used,) Ludwig kit. It was a black wrap, 12, 16, 22, w/Jazzfest snare. Best sounding set of drums anyone could have asked for. Heavy too! I remember me and the bass player lugging that kit around on buses and subways to get to gigs.

We were too young to drive! lol

Wish I still had those Kents and the Luddy's. Great drums each in their own right.

John

Too many great drums to list here!

Actually, all of mine have been favorites.

My first drum was a metal Folgers coffee can with a plastic lid. This was in the mid-60s, and my parents had already paid for over a year's worth of private lessons on the organ, and I quit 'cause I wanted to play the drums instead. They didn't think I'd stay with it (and want to play something else later), so that's all they would invest in...

Later, with my own money, I bought a Beverly Snare Drum at Avenue Pawn Shop in Pauline, Ks (just south of Topeka). Didn't come with a case, but the carboard box it came in had a built-in cardboard handle. Great stuff!

In either 1970 or possibly early 1971 I bought my first set -- a 50s Gretsch in WMP (14x20, 9x13, 6.5x14 SD, 19" KZildjian Ride & 13" KZildjian HiHats and later added a new 16x16 Gretsch WMP floor tom & a 10x14 Ludwig WMP Parade drum as another tom).

In late 1971 or probably 1972, I bought a brand-new Ludwig Rock Duo set in Champagne Sparkle (22/22/16/13/12). Got a good deal as I'd moved out of the "garage band" stage of my life and played with a large, BST-Chicago style group that Midwestern Music in Topeka helped to sponsor. Got all new AZildjian cymbals.

Played that set throughout most of the 70s, until it was pretty much destroyed in an accident after a gig out in Tribune, Ks (WAY out in western Ks). Had plenty of gigs lined up and no time to wait on Ludwig (they were 6 mos behind on orders at the time), so bought what Midwest Music in Hays Ks had -- a 1978 Pearl Wood-Fiberglass set (22/16/13/12).

Still have that set, and wouldn't trade it for anything! I don't play it out anymore. I left the music scene in the very late 70s early 80s after a dramatic change in my life (I got saved) and I played my Pearls in church for years (even as I pastored for over 21 years -- I think one of the few church pastors anywhere that played the drums in his church's worship band).

Don't play as much anymore as I'd like. Sit in numerous times as a back-up drummer on an electronic Roland set -- but it ain't quite the same.

I travel some as a solo music/preaching ministry (I still sing, as always), and maybe someday will work my drums into it...

Anyway, got to go to work, so the book is complete... for now!

In 1971 when I was 12 years old, I saved up $100 and bought my first vintage set (yes it was already vintage in 1971); a very yellowed WMP four piece Getsch set date-stamped 1946 (and the seller threw in the Zildjians!). My God that wood snare was as warm and velvety as Carly Simon's voice, and those thin 14" Zildjian high-hats almost responded just by breathing on them. I loved and cared for that set like it was my first girlfriend, so naturally, it tears me apart to remember selling it for $100 in 1974 to help buy a brand new, 8-piece double-bass Rogers Fullerton swivo set (at least I was smart enough to keep the Zildjians).

I never gigged that Rogers set, and to this day it remains almost pristine sitting in my basement (complete with the original reso heads) amoung six other sets I've accumulated over the years, but none of them hold a place in heart, nor ever will, like that 1946 Gretsch set bought with hard-earned paper route money.

That 4 pc Gretsch set sounds a LOT like the 3 pc set I mentioned above... you don't happen to have any pictures of it, do you? Somewhere I've got a pic or two of me & mine the day I brought it home...

And funny thing, when I bought my Ludwig Rock Duo set, I sold the Gretsch set to my little brother... who later sold it to someone else.
