Drum Sustain Last viewed: 13 minutes ago

Hello, first time poster and I hope you all can help.

I have a Frankenstein Ludwig set: the 20 x 14 is a 1964, the 16 x 16 is from 1959 and the 12 x 8 - well I'm not too sure but it does have the white painted interior. All 3 drums are of the 3-ply variety with the original wrap. The shells are all in good shape and pretty well round. I know the hoops are warped though.

The drums are absolutely dead/choked when played in their normal position on the carpet or rug. If I put the floor tom above a hard surface, and when I hold the ride tom above a hard surface, the drums sound fabulous with lots of ring.

What gives? Since I always play them either on a carpeted floor or rug, they sound horrible. What's a guy to do to make them sing?

Thanks.

Are you playing the tom mounted on the bass drum with the conselette mount? Does the floor tom have straight legs ?

I'm playing the ride tom in a snare basket stand. The floor tom has the very old fashioned straight legs.

Vintagemore2000 - I know where you're going with this. ;)

Putting a tom tom on a snare stand has been known to deaden a drum. Especially if the basket is adjusted tight on the bottom rim. Does your bass drum have a rail consolette to mount the tom tom? You could get a suspension mount for the tom tom.

Here is a thread that should help with the floor tom.

A snare stand will work just do not tighten the basket down or it will choke the drum .

Warning ... Avoid member statuscymbal here, vintage_collector on DFO , and americanpatriot10 on eBay. Email me for his name. All are the same shady guy who has burned me and a list of other members on both boards . He is also selling on Facebook too ..

Is it the same hard surface only with the rug pulled back? Is the rug on a hollow wooden floor? Get some of the silly looking floor tom feet pictured. They look silly but they work full-on magic.

Experiment with the snare stand, which way it tilts for example [arm centered at badge or two arms either side of badge]. Tuning is key of course...

Lots of variables, try em all. And do it like they do at the stock car track; one change at a time and make a note.

Should be available from your local music store or get em to order some in. The ones pictured are Pearl, what I'm using, and they are magic.

Type "pearl isolation feet floor tom" into google to find online sources...

Hope you get them drums singin!

Gibralter makes some of those tips too that seem to have good reviews for the floor tom. http://www.musiciansfriend.com/drums-percussion/gibraltar-floating-floor-tom-feet?rNtt=gibraltar floor tom resonant&index=6

. I would also recommend for the rack tom, try using a flat based, old style, WFL style snare stand for the rack. My newer style snare stand, cradle type that tightens, still chokes my rack off. Put it on my old style WFL stand, and it sing, sing, sings!

Is this a unique condition for this kit or have you had similar outcomes with other drums, particularly other Ludwig drums? I've struggled with Ludwigs in the past and that is one of the reasons I've steered away for some time. However, I understand others have great experience with their Ludwigs, so I have to assume it is particular to the drums you have and that was the same case for the one I had.
