Drilling Holes Into Concert Tom Shells Last viewed: 4 hours ago

Loading...

Just wondering if any of you attempted to turn your respective concert toms into the traditional configuration by drilling holes for lugs on the bottom sides of the shell?

If you did, did this present any type of unforeseen "challenges"? Would the fact that the drilling would have to be done with the wrap already on the shell cause a problem?

Any and all "words of wisdom" would be greatly appreciated.

Make sure your edge work is done prior to any lug work.

Tape the area prior to drilling. Measure once, sip the coffee, measure again, kick the cat, check your measurements with a hoop, measure one last time, and then drill like a happy monkey.

I've done this before, but on some concert toms, the lugs are positioned further down the shell than as on a traditional double headed tom. Sometimes it will make the drum look a bit "off" when assembled/modified into a double headed drum, unless you are going for staggered/offset bottom lugs like on some 70's Premier drums then those would look ok. However, with, say, a Ludwig, Slingerland, Rogers, and some Grestch drums, it would throw a big red flag up to a potential buyer if you ever plan to resell them as that wasn't something they ever did at the factory.

Be sure you have the correct hoop size,....with mine, the 13" tom wont take a 13" hoop cuz the drum is labled by the inside diameter of the bottom as with the rest of my CT, and allow for floating heads. I`ve seen this error happen to someone who got the hoops for free and then had to order the correct ones, being stuck with the other ones that started the idea !!

Be sure to keep the drill level and plumb with high RPM and sharp bit !! Slow drilling leads to bit walking if you have never used a drill.

Most importantly,...show us pics. when finished !!

It`s a drum,.....Hit It !!
