Does This Look Correct To You?

The other day I picked up an early 70s (B/O "pointy" badges) Ludwig kit in Black Cortex. I paid $275.00 for the following items:

14x22 bass drum;

9x13 rack tom;

16x16 floor tom;

5x14 Supraphonic snare;

6x14 Cannon Percussion snare;

Pair of Roto-Toms (10" & 12" heads);

3 Ludwig cymbal stands; and

1 Ludwig snare drum stand

The bass drum came with its original wooden hoops with silver sparkle in-lays, original Ludwig rail consolette and a set of spur mounts. There are no extra holes in any of the shells nor have any modifications been made to them. The entire kit definitely needs a thorough cleaning and polishing, but it's extremely sound functionally.

While removing the hardware from the bass drum shell I noticed the holes that were drilled for the spur mounts. Something simply doesn't seem right to me about them. I believe that the holes as well as the mount assembly are original to the kit, as is everything else, but the holes don't seem right for this particular mount configuration.

Please have a look at the pics I've posted of the holes, the hardware on the interior of the shell and the spur mount itself and let me know what you think.

As usual, THANKS in advance for your time and your input!

Yes, that is correct. The hole is oval shaped because the arc of the spurs requires that it be that way. If the spurs were straight, then the need for the hole to be oval hole wouldn't exist.

Always great to hear from you.

Thanks for the quick and informative (as usual) response! Are there several sizes of spurs that fit this particular mount? If so, would you happen to know the size that would be correct for a 22" bass drum?

You might be familiar with the saying "Even a blind squirrel finds a nut sometimes." Well, that's me (lol)!

As far as providing some pics of the kit set-up, I won't be in a position to do that for awhile, since I just stripped all the hardware from the shells to begin the cleaning and polishing process.

I did, however, attach some pics of a few of the pieces in their original, unaltered, extremely filthy (not in a good way!) condition.

This kit will be a nice summer "project" for me and I feel fortunate that I got it at what I consider to be a more than reasonable price.

You got a steal. Nice set. I can tell it needs a small amount of tlc.. like maybe it could use some proper snare cord instead of the insulated wire shown..

That black cortex is a very stout finish that cleans up extremely nicely. A helluva deal!

POUNDER:

The insulated wire is what "sealed the deal" for me. You can never have too much of that stuff around the house (lol)!
