Dixon snare Last viewed: 8 minutes ago

Hi there.

I recently bought a snare as I thought I'd have to play until further notice.

But I would like to know more about it.

What I know is that there is some kind of wood in it (what?), it has a blue / purple-ish wrap (color?)

and that it has a sticker that says Dixon (hence I guess it is a dixon)

It has 6 lugs on each side.

Is there anyone who can tell anything about this snare?

Model? Year etc. etc

Is it something to keep or is it just junk?

I throw up a little mobile pictures I have taken:

(sorry about my english)

Wikipedia says Dixon started in 1979 in Germany.

My first kit was a Dixon :P (not 1979; not vintage). That was just an entry-level kit.

For as far as I know, it's more of a European/Asian thing. Although I read somewhere they are getting distributors in the US, but that's only very recent.

This snare looks like it's not exactly high-end either, but whether or not you want to keep it depends on whether or not you like it (and its sound).

Looks like it has some sort of fabric/leathery stuff in place of wrap, and I'm not sure what the inside is. It kind of reminds me of chipboard, but I'm probably wrong (lol).

Year/Model... I have no clue, sorry.

Thanks for your input, and you are right, it is some sort of fabric/leathery stuff there.

This Dixon is not a German made drum. This is a mid 70s Japanese, "MIJ", stencil made by Pearl for distributors. It is nothing special, they typically bring about $20-30 in that condition. With the zola-coat interior shell, however, they can be tuned to sound very good. Use an Aquarian Z-100 coated head top-side and med reso and you can actually play it and record it, and it will sound good to great, and if you really know your tuning, fantastic. Good luck with it and hope you get it tuned up to at least great. If you need tips on snare tuning, google "Bob Gatzen snare tuning" you will get a youtube link and he goes through an extensive lesson on tuning.

If you can find a replacement muffler that fits those holes, get it and use it, makes a huge difference in the way they sound when you get rid of any undesirable over-tones.

Thanks so much for your answer! :D

I actually got the original muffler, I have just removed it.

So I should put it back then?

@MrTurd: No problem, I forgive you ;)
