Die cast hoop on a supraphonic ?

Loading...

I got a early '70s LM400 with die cast hoops in a trade last year; figured

that I would just flip it. Instead, it's become one of my favorites, right

behind my hammered bronze Supra. Ludwig Heavy batter over Ludwig

Xtra Thin redo with original 18 strand snare wires (missing one strand).

I've had a bunch of '60s - early '70s Supras and have sold/traded them

since I've always preferred the sound of the same era Acros.

Try out the die cast hoops - you might be surprised.

I've tried die cast hoops on my Supraphonic but wasn't too impressed. I play C/W music so my side- stick sound is critical to me. The sound I get from die cast is not as clean sounding as the original hoops IMO.

The beauty of all of this is that it's easy to change the color pallet of a Supraphonic to suit our needs, simply by changing wires, heads, hoops...and tuning! The shell design and material is the cornerstone for our beloved Supra!

My 1970 Supra has period correct Ludwig-issued 1.6mm hoops. I have a set of Pearl FatTone hoops just sitting around that I plan to try on the drum. The folded-over and welded hem may prove ideal with the Supra. Will report back on this!

IMO the most interesting aspect of owning a Supraphonic is experimenting with it.

Hi,

Playing my Supra this evening for a big band rehearsal. I threw a die cast on several years ago, keep meaning to flip back but am very happy with the sound. (I also threw on a P86 sometime around then--very happy with that as well.) Works for me, YMV.

The die cast can deliver louder rim shots, but that's fully your call, not the rim's fault.

Have fun,

Patrick

Hmm..Well i guess the consensus is unanimous .. I want the true tone of the Supra, but i don't want to choke the drum either.. And louder rim shots ?. My guitar players will have my head !..Lol !.Was just curious cause a buddy of mine was selling a vintage die cast hoop for $25, and it seemed like a good deal and interesting concept..

Is this a Ludwig "Twin Channel" die cast hoop? IF so, I'd grab it for $25 in a heartbeat. That's a pretty decent price for one of those hoops, and if you don't like the sound, they are quite esy to flip.
