Dating My Speed King

Loading...

Please Ludwig guys, I need your help. I have recently purchased a Speed King pedal from a fellow member which I think is in fantastic shape! Thanks, burgundy!!! During the last couple of days, I have been researching this newest acquisition. From what I understand, and PLEASE correct me if I'm wrong, my pedal is from the mid-sixties or a bit beyond. The reasons: It has the longer short stops or flanges on the base piece that slides under the drum hoop. It has only one hole on the side stop which allowed access to the toe clamp roll pin. In the later editions, there was a second hole which allowed spacers to be inserted to prevent the linkage from hitting the batter head because the flanges were shorter.I believe these spacers can be seen in the Ludwig catalog from 1980. I was going to try out the pedal on Sunday but, our guitar player was ill. Am I on the right track? Are my assumptions correct? Thank you very much, guys!

First, I suggest you date ladies young man, not bass drum pedals.

Sounds like a 60's pedal to me. Wait for Mike Layton to chime in, Mikey knows how to I.D. those pedals better than me. I basically just wanted to get the 'dating ladies' joke in. :p

Too many great drums to list here!

John and Shorty:

Actually, this Speed King is a lot better looking than some of my "dates" in the past! Of course I had not been sitting in a bar for six hours before I purchased it! Oh well, "The girls all get prettier at closing time." I hope that Mike isn't as cruel as you guys!!!

Hi, Creighton!

I'm glad I'm not the only guy here who admits to a few "indiscretions" in his past! We're musicians, not saints! Hmmm...might be a good post coming.

I wish I could post pictures but, I don't even own a camera. My wife collects vintage pieces but, that doesn't help any. My pedal is the one from the mid-sixties with long stops and one hole to get to the toe clamp roll pin. Hope this helps a bit.

Thanks for responding.

longjohn, Creighton, SAZ,

Thanks very much guys! I really appreciate your input! Saz, you're right. The more I learn about these vintage pieces of art, the more I appreciate them. Thanks again.
