Crash as a HH Cymbal? Last viewed: 2 minutes ago

Loading...

Hey , Guys,

I stopped at a pawn shop today and purchased a ten inch Solar by Sabian splash cymbal. For a few bucks, I had nothing to lose. I got it home and tried it out. It was at best... okay. I then noticed as I was on the computer, that I had an extra HH around with one old Zildjian bottom. I put the Sabian at the top and tried it. Not too shabby at all! A very interesting ring. Hmm... has anyone had any luck with substituting a crash for a HH cymbal? Just wondering. Thanks.

I've used Thin for the bottom, and Paper thin for the top 14" A zildjians, and they're very Ringoesque.Plenty of wash, and great when played on the edge when closed.I've also used an 60's vintage 16 thin crash(bottom), A Zildjian, and a medium thin Sabian AA for the bottom. They sound pretty great....Think Steve Jordan

Funny Vintagemore.

There is a bit of a trend these days using crash cymbals for hi-hats. I have seen a lot of 16's. In fact some manufacturers are selling 16 HH pairs. I have also seem some guys using 17's and even a few using 18's.

I use a 15" Zildjian top HH (probably from the 50's) with a 15" heavy crash underneath. I've been looking for a matching bottom but they really sound good like this. I also used a paper-thin crash as a 14" HH top this week on a gig.

Before I got my 16" hats from Craig Lauritsen (cymbalutopia.com) I was using a couple of 16" crashes as hats for a while, medium on the bottom and a med-thin on top. Hi hat cymbals are a lot closer to ride cymbals in terms of profile, taper, edge, etc so using crashes will (usually) give you something with less definition but great 'slosh'.

Anything can work in hi-hat cymbal combinations and it`s all in the "ear of the beholder".I`m traditional with Zildjian 14" & 15" New Beat sets, but skies the limit with hi-hat experimentation.
