Craigslist -- Descriptions V.s. Pics Last viewed: 1 day ago

It can be quite entertaining at times when going through listings on craigslist which offer vintage drums for sale. Far too often the posted descriptions and asking prices seem to have little connection to the corresponding pics. Here's a perfect example: http://detroit.craigslist.org/mcb/msg/3025145759.html

Words or phrases that jumped out at me during my initial read: "amazing condition"; nice set to "tear apart some skins"; "green champagne sparkle design"; "will not last long".

Interesting to note that there was no mention of missing parts, non-original parts, extra holes in the shells, etc. I don't think the intent is to deceive. I believe that the respective seller at times doesn't have a clue what he or she is selling. Then again, as the saying goes, "one man's junk is another man's treasure!"

I've seen a lot like this on CL. At least in this case the pictures were descriptive enough so that prospective buyers have an idea what they're going to see... and not have their hopes built up too high, as has happened to me several times!

On the flip side, there have also been times when a CL post has turned out to be MUCH better than anticipated... and that has happened to me several times as well!

I have not had that better experience yet. Mine are always worse.

Thank you!

My first big "haul" was one of the good ones. A guy in Tulsa had a bunch of stuff he described in his CL post as "project drums and parts" that he just needed gone. When my wife first saw it, it was a week old. I called him and we set up a time to take a look. When we got there, it took me about 30 seconds to see I could get my investment back fairly quick so I made him an offer, paid cash, loaded my van and drove home. It took me less than a week to get my money back (off eBay), and I've not only tripled my money since but still have some of the Slingerland shells set back for a couple of projects (or one MONSTER Slingerland double-bass set!).

BTW -- Just closed the deal with the school this afternoon. Getting several band instruments as well, and the school band director is already putting me in touch with a guy from another state who wants to buy the band instruments from me... and I was just excited about the drums!!

We don't get many of those ads for vintage drums around the Memphis area.
