Crack or "design"? 1970 Ludwig rack tom

Loading...

Hi everyone. I just want to thank in advance anybody offering help or advice to this question. I just purchased a rack tom off fleabay. It was listed as being in excellent condition. In addition to its status of perfectly "in round" being a tad questionable, the drum has what looks to me like two cracks in the bearing edge on the resonant side. I'm including a picture here. After contacting the seller, he advised me that I likely don't know much about the design of vintage Ludwig drums otherwise I would understand that what I'm seeing isn't a crack but simply the way the plies come together or something of the sort. Can anyone confirm or deny? I have other Ludwig drums and have not seen this before. Thanks again!

This is very normal ply separation, it's a very easy fix.

It's not a going to break the drum shell or sound wrecker type thing. But eventually you'll need to address it. As it will keep getting larger around the circumference of the shell.

+1 with VM2K's advice. Not a difficult fix at all. Some wood glue and clamps and you're good to go!

+1 on what everyone has been saying.. Easily repairable.. However, either the seller isn't being honest, or he himself doesn't know what he's talking about.. Anyone with a brainstem can see that that is classic ply separation. So much for his "expertise" and "knowing about the design of Ludwig drums". He just put "both feet in his mouth".. Don't worry, if you do it carefully, it'll be as good as new, but i would contact the seller and send him a link to this thread, just to prove your point..

It's been like it so long it probably won't get any worse. I have that going on on my 70's Rack Tom too. It sounds fantastic. It's an easy fix, but if it ant broke then don't fix it.
