Cool Vintage Sonor Snare Find. Would love any info from Sonor experts Last viewed: 17 hours ago

Unearthed this beast yesterday on Offerup. It seems to be a pretty rare Sonor D 476 6.5 (Steel?) snare drum from the late 60's. I wold love some clarification on that from any Sonor experts.

Really cool drum. A fair amount of pitting. The Strainer is jacked (and impossible to find a replacement from what I can tell online) and I am not sure if the hole above the strainer is a factory vent hole or a homemade job. Looks factory but seems like a strange spot for a vent hole. Again Sonor experts please let me know what is up if you can.

Sonor museum has this listed in a 1967 German Catalog but their badge timeline shows this style of badge starting in 1975 not 1967. so thats a bit confusing. I am going with 67 for now because it looks the same as the badge in the catalog.

I love that other than the messed up strainer it appears all original. Even the heads and Sonor Snare wires look original to the drum.

Can't wait to hear how this one sounds! Looks like a 6.5 Supra but only 8 lugs.

Any info would be great Sonor peeps!

The only thing that has me a tad perplexed about the age is what the badge says ( or rather doesn't say ) It says " Made In Germany " anything I've seen prior to the Berlin Wall coming down made note of being made in " West Germany " some cases ( Western ). Seen it on a few Paiste cymbals, as well as other items made in Germany during that time ( model trains, drum hardware,etc.. )

However, upon looking through the Vintage Drum Guide I see that by the 1970's Sonor removed the western part and just said " Made In Germany " So I'd guess this is from the 1970's. '75 or later. I'll see if I can't find other info for you.

It`s a drop 476. It`s prolly got a three digit date stamp inside. My guess is that number will start with a zero. Making it 1970. Reason I say that is it has triple flange hoops. It`s very possible to be 69 but the hoops were not made until 70+ They will not fit Champions or Phonics because those lugs don`t come out as far and if you did, there would be a lot of noticeable splay in the rods.

SONOR made a design change to all drums every decade. Yours is the 476 with that hoop change. 70/73... That`s it.

Thanks Oddball! I do see a 3 digit number but it looks like 304 or maybe 804 if the first digit is smeared. Would that mean a 73? Were they still making that lug style and strainer in 73?

Thanks

April 73. That, s when it was assembled and sold.(it, s official birthday) Surplus was stored so even though they were not making it, they had it. After spending a fourtune with lawsuits against Japan, the early 70, s had budget sets to sell fast and recover money. Teardrops were still the top crop kit until the Champion series in 72ish came out. Your snare wires are very saught after. If for any reason you don, t like them, they, ll go in hours.

From OddBall

The 444 is 15x5.

The 1969 USA catalog at Sonor Museum shows the D-444 as 14" x 5".
