Concert Tom Revival?

Loading...

I have a question.. do you think I can transform a concert tom to a common tom with the resonant head putting on the lugs?!

Are there any structural problem to do it?

I've always loved Phil Collins's concert tom setup. Listen to his drum duets with Chester Thompson on the last few Genesis live albums -- really great-sounding drums. And the drum sound on the Abacab album is just killer.

Classic "barking toms" sound! Phil's words not mine :D

I'm actually contemplating getting a concert tom kit again.....probably Slingys this time instead of Luddys.....why? Cheaper price! :D

Here is a man who still plays a full concert tom kit! He has played concert toms almost for his entire run as a drummer. If you listen closely to the clip, they actually sound excellent.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_5kkmpo9OPg&feature=fvwrelhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QzdoWfBAMx8

Oh man! I always liked Chico's playing.....Chico was the man! (sorry, no 70's pun intended! :p )

Gotta love them concert toms for projection. I've got a late 70s Slingerland kit with 10", 12", 14" and 15" CTs. Right now I'm waiting for a pair of 8" and 9" CTs to complete the kit. As far as the duct tape and paper towel shots, they do tend to ring. My solution is to stick 1" x 1" foam weather stripping in a ring on the underside of my Evans Hydraulic heads. They sound awesome.

Remember DEADRINGERS?

A local music shop was going out of business last year. They had a ton of old deadringers hanging on the wall. The guy told me I could just take them. I just couldn't bring myself to actually get them. When I was little, I thought they looked so cook stuck onto the bottom of a Ludwig silver dot head. Classic shoebox 70's drum sound.

Yeah. You can still buy them for about 30 bucks or so. Or you can go down to Home Depot and pick up weather stripping. I bought two rolls for about 3 dollars and was enough to do my entire kit.

That's exactly it. My band is a 70s classic rock cover band.

you should have no problem at all, as long as the tom your converting has a bearing edge already cut into it? you would need to have carpentry experience or someone who does, with the correct type holes, and factory hardware and if it is performed correctly no one would be the wiser.

It’s just marvelous to hear Chico’s beautifully tuned kit on the Quintet video. It makes it so pleasing as the guitar solos, the drums sing the harmony perfectly as the tonality changes. Beautiful!!!
