I started cleaning a dual-badge COB Powertone for a friend last night and realized that the hoops are steel. If I remember correctly the '69 COB Powertone I had last year had brass hoops. I was wondering if by the 70's Rogers were making them with steel rims or if these have been swapped out. The gunk on the rims seems to be of the same vintage, but they could have been swapped eons ago. Thanks for any insight.

they all had steel hoops. From the first one to the last one. Dyna-Sonics as well. Same for the SuperTen.
What is a "dual badge" Powertone?

Hey Jack! While I have your attention I have a few questions (and pics). I obviously wasn't paying attention because this snare is a ten lugger (that I just assumed was COB, but never tested) with no paper tag and serial is 72554X.
I'm now assuming it's an early Super Ten, but it doesn't have the oval Super Ten badge. I don't see Super Ten serials in your Rogers serial guide. Can you help me clear this up? I still can't believe I didN,t notice the lug count!!! I'm chocking it up to too many gigs and not enough sleep!

That is a SuperTen. Ten lugs, straight sided steel shell with the Rogers typical inverted bead top and bottom. Vintage is approx. 1978. All Big R SuperTen 5x14 COS snare drums from 1975-1984 have the badge in the same location as yours does. They also have the two "oval badge" holes behind the Big R sticker. Shell is Chrome on Steel, as are all of the hoops put out since at least the early Swivomatic period beginning in the late 50's.

Much thanks once again Mr McFeeters! I'm loving the Super Ten. I'd never played one before. Once I got heads and snares back on it was easy to tune very pleasant to my ears. Very different from my Dyna, but not a lesser snare, just wilder and more "open". Unfortunately I have to give it back to my friend once I finish his champagne sparkle Dayton kit. Some idiot sprayed the floor tom black and it took me weeks to clean that (thou shall not kill...). I'm preparing the rest of the kit for a Novus job, a little hoop painting and my friend will have his kit back looking as fantastic as they already sound.

I had read that review you posted a while back and thought... Oh well.
These are fantastic snare drums. You nailed the description of it very well.... Wilder and more open. And loud. You can give a guitar player PTSD waiting for the next rimshot.
