Ching Ring Last viewed: 17 minutes ago

So what's the deal with the exploding, over the top prices for vintage, Ralph Kester Ching Rings!? I remember last year you could easily buy one for $50, in players condition, fully intact. That seemed to be the going rate for quite some time. Now I haven't seen one for less than $175!! I regret not buying one then.....will they go down again and why such a high price?

some items seem to do that, way up and then back down. not sure what causes it. the Ludwig hi hat tambourine has done the same thing. ive seen them from 35-175 on regular auctions.

Yes, this is a strange phenomenon. There are plenty of original Ching Rings out there, but not a lot popping up for sale. Once the general populace believes that something is collectable, desirable, and will appreciate in value (despite no real, high demand), everyone seems willing to pay an unrealistic, high price. The resulting high asking prices only reinforce everyone’s belief that the item is actually highly collectable and sought-after (remember Beany Babies?). This happened to Tech Stocks in the ‘90s (yah, I made a bundle and then lost most of it). Whatever the over-inflated item is, whether Ching Rings or Beany Babies, eventually someone says, “Hey, it ain’t worth that and I'm not paying it”, then the bubble bursts and the prices drop back down. Now if that would only happen to crude oil.

I bought a reproduction model for cheap. It's well made and sounds good. I know it's not a real one, but I like it.

The more expensive ones are usually the ones that say "Patent Pending". They are the very early ones and usually demand the most dollars. I have one that is missing some jingles, has about 4 sets, but still works. Send me a PM and I'll work a deal for you if you want.

Just a guess. John Bonham?

That's EXACTLY why.The same for early 70's LM 402s,Ludwig cow bells that were made by Paiste, and 36" symphonic Paiste gongs.Forget about a green sparkle or thermogloss maple 3 ply 70's kit in or an amber vistalite 70's vintage kit.in Bonham sizes.Maybe not Holy grail money, but close to it.

It of course is the JB connection, But the prices have risen quite a bit in the last year,I think it is due to the forums ranting about the originals as I am one of the leaders in this area, same thing as with acrolite they have been discussed to death prices have gone up on them .

to me the weird thing is the high ebay prices seem to be for those in bad shape because those are the only ones that surface, not the ones in good clean straight condition.

they're all bent, missing stuff, pitting, etc...pricing don't reflect the issues. however if these are the only ones to become avail how long will a buyer wait til one in good clean straight condition to surface?

and if someone can make a pretty penny for those i salute them. but thats just my guess.

Besides the obvious Bonham references, it does go further than that. Thanks for the excellent responses...Clapping Happy2
