Can anyone tell me about this “Vin Yard” Gretsch snare?

Hi,

I’m in the market for a maple snare for my 70s Gretsch kit and I’ve been looking at the Gretsch New Classic model as a good candidate (if I can find a used one for under $300 (in Europe) I’ll go for it).

I’ve been doing a bit of research on the available Gretsch models (Brooklyn, USA Custom, Marquee, Renown, etc) and thought I knew what was out there, but then I ran into this snare: Usa Custom Vin Yard 14x5.5. (see pictures).

The only information the seller provides is this:

http://blog.gretsch.com/drum-great-vinnie-colaiuta-discovers-gretsch-factory-vineyard/2001/04/

... which is cute, but doesn’t tell give me any information on the materials, quality and sound of the snare in question. For $350 it looks like a good deal, but I suspect I may be paying most of that for the fact that it is a collector model, not because it is a great drum.

Does anyone know if a) this snare is actually legit B) where I can find technical information on it c) it sounds better than a New Classic model?

THANKS A BUNCH,

Alex

I once played a Vin yard set a few years ago and it was just sublime. Vin yard shells are old new stock shells kept under lock and key for decades basically. Im not sure how far they date back but your getting aged shells from gretsch's yesteryear collection. A simple google about should fill you up with knowledge.

If this is a Vin yard then snappedysnapsnap my friend!!

That looks like a nice drum.

I picked up a 2008 (125th Anniversary) Vinyard snare drum 5 or 6 years ago. 300 made from handpicked old stock. I like the drum.

An hour after writing this post the add was gone! I guess the snare was the real deal. Too bad :-(

In any case, I wasn't crazy about the black hoops and lugs, they kinda killed the "vintage" vibe for me, but I guess I'm just trying to console myself :'-/

Thanks for the information...

Oooh bad luck. You could of swapped that black hardware out.

Next time you see Vin Yard jump. They really are modern yet vintage Gretsch drums. Outstanding in my experience.

Next time buddy!
