Camco tuxedo value

Loading...

Here's a kit i'm going to go look at. Photo is from seller.

Any idea of value of these drums? Is that an original wrap option for these? I'm trying to get more info as I type this.

Seller did tell me there is one missing t and claw for bass. Looks like the snare is original to the kit too.

Thanks for your input, Gary.

Looks like sta-tight brackets on the floor tom. So different than my Tuxedo kit and the one that Steve Maxwell sold. I bought mine for around $1400 I think it was and Steve sold one in collector grade museum quality for $4k. I would actually value mine closer to $2k now that it is cleaned up.

The drums that I can see look to have the original interior white paint. The bass drum looks like it has something funky going on inside. Also the bass drum appears to have different bass drum legs vs the other Tuxedo kits I have seen.

Perhaps its a much earlier Tuxedo kit? I would try to offer around the $800 range or at the very least shoot low and work your way up. If it has no extra holes, no modifications (other than maybe paint inside the bass drum) then I would jump on it.

FWIW the badges on my original Tuxedo kit are not amazing. What I mean by that is the grommets were somewhat poorly installed vs your standard Ludwig or even Gretsch (snare) of that era. On two of the drums you could spin the badges and the back of the grommets inside the drums were not perfectly flattened evenly. One of the small details Camco missed and the same is true with my other Camco drums of that era.

Hope that helps!

Seller is claiming all original, no extra holes from the late 50's. I'm was under the impression camco name started early 60's?

Any other info is welcomed. I'm going tomorrow to look at them, i'll report back my findings or with pics of them in my home...

Ok, I just got back from looking at them and this is definitely a players kit. Sizes are 20bd, 13tt, 14ft(I measured and its really a 14") and 14x5(.5) snare.

Drums are filthy and lots of pitting/bubbling on the chrome. Hoops are all very nice and original.

Floor tom has 2 holes with no brackets, not sure why. Could this have been a 4 legged FT?

Rail mount is pretty rusty, all hardware is rusted with little to no chrome left.

Snare is nice and in pretty nice shape, very little rust on chrome.

He says he's firm at 1400.00 usd.

Has owned them from the 60's but is second owner. Claims green paint is original but i'm not so sure since it's all over the hardware inside the bass, white paint underneath it.

Let me know what you think, it's a shame the floor tom might end up in the wrong hands.

Thanks, Gary.

Gary,

NO WAY that kit is worth $1400. You guys know what I paid for mine. Maybe the vintage drum karma was on my side that day but that kit is rough.

I consider a player's kit something like my first Gretsch; no extra holes, new wrap & edges and otherwise no modifications. Maybe if the kit had been repaired and extra holes filled then it would also fit in that category.

This fits into the project, modified and possible headache category. I would price them accordingly and certainly not $1400. I have seen other Camco kits pop up for around that. I even was watching a Tuxedo floor tom in red sparkle I think go for less than $300.

The green paint is definitely not original so you'd need to get rid of that which could be tricky. Wrapped Oaklawn kits had white painted interiors, lacquered exteriors had clear interiors.

The bass drum spurs are fair enough and probably kosher - they used both the curved spurs and the more Gretsch-y looking ones like these.

Check on the badges if it says USA or not. If not, then its an early 60s otherwise more like mid 60s.

The 13" to 14" tom span is odd and a bit of a value killer though I've seen it before on a Camco.

Only the 18" floor toms had four legs so that wouldn't explain the extra holes. Some sort of mount for a cowbell or similar? I've seen the sta-tight brackets on a couple of Camco floors toms before as well but they're not standard Camco issue. But all those negatives make that particular drum less attractive.

Given it's got all the rusty and debilitated chrome work too, I understand why you're hesitant.

There's no original state Camco kits on ebay at the moment to even give you a bit of a comparison but I'd say, though on the high side, it's not insanely high. I would've thought a couple of hundred lower would've been more realistic but it does have the snare. No hardware, I guess.

If you're happy to have a kit that probably sounds amazing but has all those negatives you've figured out for yourself, it may be worth it. If not, then just pass. Others will come up, just not that frequently.

The tuxedos don't have the same collector cache as the round lugs but they're essentially the same drums.

Hey guys, thanks for the input. I'm not really in the market for a total restore and definitely not at that price.

I'm kind of in the middle with a set of teardrops in which the wrap just came in. I'm just too busy and I just had hand surgery so I'm only doing a little at a time.

Thanks again, Gary.
