Camco Questions Last viewed: 7 seconds ago

Loading...

First, I'd like to publicly thank DolFan54 for all the time he's spent as well as all the information he's provided me recently regarding vintage CAMCO drums.

I'm posting my additional questions here because I'm hoping to give him a little break from all of my inquiries!DOH

Hopefully these will be questions that some of you other CAMCO "experts" can help me out with, so here goes:

1. What is the main difference among the drums manufactured by CAMCO in their Oaklawn, IL, Chanute, KS, and Los Angeles, CA facilities? Is it the plies of the shells, the quality of the hardware installed, or something else?

2. Were the shells used on CAMCO Chanute, KS drums 3-ply?

3. I realize how "challenging" it is to locate original CAMCO tone controls. Are there other vintage tone controls that would fit the factory-drilled holes in vintage CAMCO shells?

4. Did CAMCO produce a kit with a 24" bass drum, 14" & 15" rack toms and 16 & 18" floor toms?

THANKS in advance for your time and your help!

Don't know when the change happened but Harry Cagany's book said camco went from 3 to 4 to 5 plies, and I am pretty sure they went from white paint interiors to clear by the time they got to L.A.

FWIF:

I believe that after the moves to BOTH Chanute and L.A., it was not uncommon for prior inventoried stock (shells, in particular) to go out the door with new badges. Thus, you could have Oaklawn shells on a Chanute kit, a mix of both, etc.

I have also seen forum posters take issue with some of HC's 'facts', so it might help to get additional opinions regarding Camco drum history.

I second your appreciation for DolFan54-- knowledgeable, generous and high-integrity... too name a few qualities!
