Camco Oaklawn wood 99 Super score!

Loading...

I recently purchased this drum off of Ebay and it arrived yesterday. For $354 I'm very pleased however it was missing many parts. No tension rods, snare guards on bottom hoop are missing, unoriginal top hoop and the rail assembly part of the parallel strainer. Here are some quick pics. I still need to take it apart for a thorough cleaning but overall it looks pretty good. The snare stand was included in the deal as well.

These wood shell 99 Supers are very rare but most pop up like this one with the Tuxedo lugs. I sold one years ago that had round Aristocrat lugs. Too bad I didn't know then what I know now!

BTW this was a second chance offer as I was initially outbid on the item and with a zero feedback seller. Needless to say I was very hesitant but decided to roll the dice since I am protected thru PayPal and my credit card.

I'm glad that I went thru with this transaction and the seller shipped the drum immediately. I had the drum exactly one week after the auction ended!

Nice one Steve,... congratulations.

One to add to that beautiful collection of yours.

Good thing you had all the parts to complete it. I bet the scarcity of those parts and the lack of knowledge on these drums must have prevented the auction from attracting many other potential buyers.

She will look smashing once cleaned up.

How do they sound compared to a regular 5” Tuxedo or Aristocrat?

Very nice! I wish I had the WMP 99 I sold years ago.

Thanks!

Sound wise I would take a standard over a 701/99 any day. They have a rather narrow tuning range. Unlike Rogers there is a snare bed. I don't know if that helps or hurts the sound but either WAY I can see why there are not a whole lot of these out there.

Check out the original auction

I almost passed on this snare but what caught my eye was the tone control. Most Tuxedo lug snare drums don't have tone controls. The hard to find Orchestra Model has one along with an Aristocrat strainer instead of the economy strainer. When I looked at the strainer I realized something wasn't quite right. Flipping through the pics I finally saw the pic with the rod going through the shell confirming it's a 99 Super.

I threw in a snipe bid of $354 with 10 minutes to go. At that time the bid was only $212 or so. I was ****ed that I hadn't thrown in a much higher bid once I realized I got outbid. WHen I got the second chance offer I was glad I hadn't or I would've paid much more for the drum. It was meant to be!

That's a sweet drum! Always a fan of silver sparkle. This may be a stupid question but something that always baffled me was how the tone control works it's not like any other I've seen. I've never had my hands on a Camco to see it in person, any chance you can enlighten me?

Not stupid at all. Unless you've seen one, it is hard to imagine how it works.

It is a worm drive muffler/tone control. If you look at this pic you will see that there is a brass woven cable that runs from the interior side of the knob up to the bottom of the muffler bracket. When you turn the knob that cable turns. At the muffler side it is threaded at the end and goes either up or down in the bracket depending on which WAY you turn the knob on the outside. They are very cool in design and work very well.

Nice drum Steve. I remember the other post you did on it. The one thing i was wondering bout is...i thought with this type lugs it would have an oval badge???

The oval badge was used near the end of the Oaklawn era. It wasn't lug specific.
