Camco Guys...doesnt The Grommet Look To Good To Be True?

Found this tom at Preybay...http://www.ebay.com/itm/Camco-9x13-Oaklawn-1960s-era-3D-Moire-rack-tom-SEE-MY-VINTAGE-LISTINGS-/150767472803?pt=Vintgae_Drums_Percussion&hash=item231a7110a3I was about to bid (starts at $249.00 and it already has a bid!) when I realized the grommet looks too new...I have a 3D Moire 5x14 snare and the badge doesn't look like that at all...Opinions?....

Vinny, The grommet looks new to me and clean.I would ask for a photo of the edge of the drum from the outside with out head and rim on drum. The wrap looks like a new wrap we at the shop had a new roll of this wrap its thinner and you would have to paint the drum a flat white piant on the outside of the shell so you would not see the wood shell under the wrap..Drum looks like a rewrapped shell to me.Mikey

I have a ton of respect for Mikey, but I have to disagree. I think this is a -legit- drum! Use the magnifier feature on the auction page photo. Look carefully at the shell just below the lugs. See the corrosion on the wrap from the lug metal? (dark, brownish stain,) That takes years to form. Note the cracks around the tone control holes. That's 'aging' on that wrap!

If it was a re-wrap, the wrap would be pristine everywhere. The fact that there is some slight staining and cracking on the wrap, especially under the lugs and tone control holes, verifies its age.

I say it's the 'real whammy-jammy.'

I 'could be' wrong, been known to happen. Opinions?

have to agree about the wrap being original for the reasons stated above, not as sure about the grommet

The wrap looks real, the grommet does not.

Steve, Vinny - Do you think it's possible that somebody slapped an Oaklawn badge on an L.A. drum in order to milk some more $ out of it?

Ask for a photo of the interior, specifically the bearing edge and behind the badge. If there was any tampering with the badge, it'll show up on the inside of the shell. The bearing edge will show the number of plies and that will tell the story!

John,

Highly unlikely as the rail mount was pretty much non-existent by the end of the Oaklawn era. For some reason badges seem to fall off of more Camco drums than any other drum company. Probably just a new grommet for the original badge. My Chanute era floor tom has a bad grommet that I'm going to have to replace soon before I end up losing the badge at a gig!
