Camco @ 64-65 World's Fair

Loading...

I had posted this on another forum, but in thinking it out, I realized that this being a site dedicated to vintage drums, it's probably more at home here. My apologies to members here who are also DFO'ers for having to endure this twice....

I lived about a quarter mile from the NY World's Fair grounds in the 60's, just about lived in the place, stopped counting after well over 300 visits.

Came across some old pictures I took from then the other night. I would make it a point to stop by the Burbon Street area and spend some time watching/listening to some great music from these guys who were a fixture there.

The drummer was Sam Ulano, and the group was the Sol Yaged Trio. Man they would cook!

The first year (1964) Sam had a well worn Slingerland set in red sparkle. I would stand at the wrought iron and marvel at how great a drummer he was, and how great those drums sounded.

When the Fair re-opened in 1965 I of course resumed my routine and was greeted by this Camco set. Thought it was pretty cool, and of course he sounded as good as ever!

Nope Jolo, have no idea who that is. But he looks impressed by the kit as well.

Nah, THIS is me, blocking a good view of the kit though....lol

And for any of you who went to the Fair, this should look familiar. The NY State pavillion. Saw alot of local bands play there. Some remarkably good, others remarkably forgettable. But there was ALWAYS something going on there.

My mom played there for a week or so...I was 8..I remember helping her turn music pages on the piano as it poured rain outside..as it was windy inside the pavillion.

Looking at those pics..I'd say those were great times for this country..kinda different from today I would say..

I remember a few years later in Jr High mid summer...going with some of my friends on a lark to the year round ice skating there for a day..it was a lonely place..the fair was all gone..and...I never went back...
