Calling All ROGERS Experts! Last viewed: 8 hours ago

I just acquired this Rogers Powertone wood snare but I know nothing about Rogers drums, aside from a tiny Wikipedia blurb...

What I Know:

-5" X 14"

-Red Onyx

-8 Lug

-All hardware present and working

-Gray painted interior

-Pretty mint, just surface grime right now

What I Don't Know:

-Production Year?

-Collect-ability / Desire-ability?

-Dayton vs Cleveland?

-Type of wood?

-Ply?

-Is 'Powertone" a full drum line or just a snare model?

-VALUE??

Also wondering how to take off the white powdery/chalky build up on the muffler's metal surfaces. Would this be steel or aluminum??

Any info is appreciated...

Great drum!

a lot of the tension rods look wrong though...

Please take them out..take a pic.....I'll bet there is 3-4 kinds in there...

Think I still have some or all of the correct ones left....

Hello, looks like the butt plate has wrong tightening holder bar, wrong screws that hold it onto the butt plate. all aftermarket tension rods. good paper tag dates it around 64 - 66. very collectable but where is the wrap seam? the finish looks original. I would guess price wise from 300 - 400. depends on a lot like, in round? good edges? good sound? chrome condition? strainer smooth action or sticky or worn? they hold their value and sound great. voted into the top 10 north American snare drums. hope this is a help to you. oh and do not take off the chalky white stuff. does not change the sound. but does add value if not tampered with. this is a vintage north American drum, not some other piece of work. a lot of it is better left as is. clean up the chrome without scratching it. and use soft cloth on the finish. powertone is what they changed the holiday line into. in snare drums around this vintage, later in 1970,s all models were powertones. BTW. all the shells are the same anyway. just different lug configurations or missing the tone controls - muffler - dampners. however you call them.

Nice catch!

There are 8 of each of these rods, a matching set on each side, and a full set of washers.

the long square ended ones look like rogers and the short square look slingerland. from your pictures they looked aftermarket.

Are original tension rods hard to come by?

oops, I think the bottom hoop is aftermarket. I would use what you have if they are smooth working tension rods. put the Slingerlands on the bottom and correct rogers on top. rogers used about 3 or more different time lines of tension rods. if you don't know rogers time lines then getting the right ones maybe a problem. it is a collectable - playable great sounding drum as is. maybe find a correct butt plate. plate. has 2 holes through it and proper screw head bolts to hold it on tightening the snare wire cords.

A couple of other notes:

That is a Cleveland shell with a Dayton tag.

Probably a 5 ply maple shell.

The chaulky material is zinc oxide and can be easily removed.

I don't know how I could have missed the Dayton label. dates this to later 1966 maybe early 67.

It's a cool old drum. Fix it up the best you can and play it.
