Buying Vintage Drums

Loading...

Owning a vintage drum is definitely a plus. A Vintage drums as the wood ages it develop's a very rich sound to them, and with the right skins it a plus. But when buying such drums you have to be very careful, You have to make sure that all original parts are there. That previous owner took good care of the drums. Drums that have been beat up to crap, is best to stay away if you are not handy with hands or familiar in how to get parts or restoring wood and metal. This can become very expensive also the search for parts can be a challenge. Depending on brand part can be very hard to find and those that have them charge an arm and leg for the part. The same with metal drums rust sets in and can be very hard to remove. In the process of removing you create huge messes that stain carpets, walls, and clothing with chemicals needed to bring back to it original luster. So be wise be careful in what you buy don't get stiff with drums that you can not find parts or need to much to repair, It will cost you big bucks. Also keep in mind not all drums were not made to use with plastic heads and may need to buy Calf heads and they aren't cheap.

I understand what cuquito717 is saying here and he`s been around in this business alot longer than most of us have.He really knows his stuff and is only saying to be cautious when buying vintage drums and esp.the new members entering the vintage drum market for the first time.It can be more of a pain than joy if we`re not careful and don`t know what we`re doing. He`s certainly not trying to scare anyone off here, but with his knowledge about drums-it`s always a pleasure to hear what he has to say.

Easy Wayne, my reply was all in good fun. Please note the hahaha in the op's response above. The typed word can appear to be a cruel, humorless witch.

Wisedom says take care, but the main thing to be concerned about is the flat grey paint inside the earlier Rogers drums. One inhale, and you can be hooked into a serious addiction. That's why I stopped bidding on that Rogers 14x14 red onyx so early. The guy even warned that the fumes were still there when you take a head off. Totally dangerous. That's another reason I prefer '68 and early '69 with speckled paint inside. No addicting fumes. :D
