Building a Rogers Tower Snare . . . Your thoughts?

Loading...

And this is why I ask the Experts, the Forum's Guru's

I agree with what you have said, this beautiful tom will be brought back to its glory, as a Tom drum !

Thanks Mike, Glen and all of you for your advice.

Now the fun begins, trying to find the rest of the drums to make a set out of this !

My wife is gonna kill me.

Thanks again for the great advice

Michael

I picked up a beautiful 8x12 Rogers Black Onyx Tower tom shell that I am going to turn into a snare drum. I was able to get all of the original Tower snare parts for the build including the proper throw, butt, tall boy rim for the top and snares. Am still looking for an original Rogers 12" 6-hole bottom snare rim (if they even exist) but will use another makers rim until I find one. I plan on using a nice black vent hole piece in the swivomatic tom hole to "hide it". And some nice small black round head bolts to fill the holes. Everything seems to fit just right.

So. . . . Am I out of my mind for this project?

I absolutely love the wrap it look so cool and dont have a need for a tom.

I have also acquired a Pearl Blue Onyx tom drum and all the original parts for the Vision line to do the same.

What are the Guru's thoughts to this newbie????

Thanks

Michael

No, please don't. These drums are rare enough. Someone else will need these toms. Buy a Pork Pie Squealer, instead.

Doing the project with shells that are already compromised would be less controversial. :)

I like your idea! You'll always get some yes and some no answers. So do as you see fit and post pictures along the journey. Done right it'll be a sweet little snare. Are you doing the woodwork yourself?

Glenn.

Not a guru just havin fun with some old dusty drums.

Mike,

Glenn is right... you're going to get a lot of yes's on this project and a lot of no's. I'm leaning toward the no. Here's why:

You have a perfectly good, vintage Rogers tom which is unmolested. For your snare conversion, you're going to have to drill two holes for the strainer/throw-off and two holes for the butt plate, plus you're going to have to cut snare beds into the reso bearing edge. Then you'll have to add some generic snare hoop because Rogers never made a 12" snare (that I know of). You may end up with one hell of a nice little snare, but at the cost of removing one perfectly good vintage tom from the world's inventory.

Now I'm not against the idea of converting a tom to a snare. I did this myself with a 10x14 Big R tom shell, but it already had extra holes and a cracked wrap. If you were going to modify a shell which was already molested, I'd say go for it! In fact, if you want a donor 8x12 Rogers shell with some holes already in it (drilled for Ludwig clip mounts, Ugh!), I'll send it to you free of charge. Keep us informed of your progress with this idea.

CTMichaelV has answered everyone via an edit to the OP - see top of page, the tom will remain a tom.
