Any idea what drum kit Buddy was playing in this clip???. It doesn't look like WFL or Ludwig. Thought I saw Rogers mounts on it but I can't be certain.
Buddy Rich - Melborne Tonight
Tommy, It may be worthwhile to use the show host "Graham Kennedy" in your search.. The show was widely referred to down here just as "The Graham Kennedy Show". There is a DVD set of show highlights available .. I'll do a further search anyhow." Considered by many as the ‘King’ of Australian television, Graham Kennedy established himself on the ground-breaking prime-time live variety show In Melbourne Tonight, launched on GTV-9 in 1957. From there he was given the golden opportunity on special Friday night editions to host The Graham Kennedy Show and the rest is history - a bold, jocular and decidedly hilarious slice of Australian television variety."CheersJohn
NICE post John! Interestingly, I was aware that it was Graham Kennedy!.. but .. it didn't occur to search his name as opposed to "In Melbourne Tonight". Maybe you can find the exact date!

Never seen this clip before. Wow! I just have to shake my head in amazement that he could do what he did.Is his snare mounted unusually high? Don't recall noticing it being so high when I saw him in later years.
If I may offer this... I have also made this observation about the HEIGHT of Buddy's snare drum, and over the years at that.. because .. it would change! The highest I think I had ever seen it was when he was playing the Fibes kit in 1967. That was very short lived, although as everyone knows today, he KEPT the Fibes SFT 690/COF snare drum. Anyway, on those clips with the Fibes.. ( and I have a few! ) .. the snare drum was like up to his chest it seemed! During his Rogers endorsement which proceeded the Fibes, his snare drum wasn't quite that high... but still kinda up there. When he moved over to Slingerland in 1968, the snare drum height seemed to come down, but then he started with that very "rakish" angle, and especially so with the Slingerland 4X14 16 lug Buddy Rich model. When he went over to Ludwig .. again! .. in 1977, the height wasn't there... not like it used to be anyway. So yes... you are correct! He gradually lowered the height and the angle as time went on.

I'm betting this clip is from 1960/61, which means Buddy was with Rogers, so... I thought the same thing! The hardware looks like Swivo-Matic, but it's hard to see what the drums are. I will say that the set in the clip was supplied/backline, as they are not Buddy's. Seeing as this was his nightclub act with singing.. dancing.. a little comedy.. and drumming, I would suspect that the drums were supplied, especially so with this gig being in Australia.

I would say 1960 for the TV show.. probably January ... He was here twice in 1960...January and again in December. Here is a radio interview that some may not have heard, this is from his January visit.

He again toured OZ in December 1960 with one of Lee Gordon's Shows. Prior to that he had toured for Lee Gordon (promoter), in 1954 & again in 1956.
Cheers
