Big Apple Drum Retailers

Loading...

Greetings everyone, my name is Luc and this is my first post on Vintage Drum Forum.

I would appreciate your recommendation for a drum store in NYC. I’m based in Montreal and I have no experience with the Big Apple retail drum scene. I’m visiting the city through Christmas and I plan on making time to explore any likely drum stores -- I appreciate your recommendations.

Cheers!

Ditto to above and below. I have always heard Maxwell's is the Mecca of vintage drums... and when Steve Maxwell posts here, "people listen" so I think that is the place to either start or finish.

Not a Guru... just interested..

OMG! I am from the UK(SW England) and was out in the U.S. on tour earlier this year. We stopped off in NYC to do a Show and and a TV thing. We stayed down in The Bowery in a lovely Hotel which is called The Bowery Hotel. Anyway to cut a long story short we had a day off in between shows. I remembered about this Maxwells place and thought I'll give it a go. I took a walk up through Manhattan which took about an hour. Eventually got to Times Square, found the doorway, went up the lift and.......wow! Although small the placed is stuffed to the gills with quality! So much so I left with a 60's Ludwig 14x6.5 COB SS!! My walk was worth it.

If you like new Gretsch and Craviotto, and or vintage U.S. drums the place is for you. The Snare wall is particularly good. Don't know about the cymbals, but they did have a booth full of them. The place definitely

had that Aladdins cave feel.

40's Slingerland Radio King WMP
60's Ludwig Downbeat Silver Spark
70's Ludwig Super Classic White Marine
60's Gretsch RB Champaigne Spark

00's DW Collectors Broken Glass

Is Mannys Music still around down there? It was right around Sam Ash. Anyone remember Alex Guitars around there also? He was a full custom guitar builder in the area back in the 70's. I know sadly Pro Percussion is long gone owned by Frank Ippolito. That was always my fav. :)

Glenn.

Not a guru just havin fun with some old dusty drums.

Long Island Drum Center.

That one brings back memories. Bought my '70's Gretsch kit from them back in '78, when they were still in Bellmore, on Jerusalem Ave. Think there are a few locations now, none of which are in The City. Nyack and Plainview, maybe one more out East. Try a few google searches.

Thanks for the Memory Lane and happy hunting. Manny's is still in Manhattan.

Thanks for the input everyone. Maxwell’s is where I’ll start.

I love the Aladdin’s Cave reference, thanks gecko.

Manny’s looks cool too, thanks B.

Stay loose and have a Merry Christmas.
