Best Snare Ever Manufactured Last viewed: 15 seconds ago

Okay, I know that music is highly subjective and that everyone has personal preferences but, what do you think was the "best" vintage snare drum ever made? I have a vintage Supra from around 1980 and I don't think I have ever played a sweeter sounding drum. Just an opinion. I am certainly interested in yours! Thanks.

Brian

Aye ay. 1980 is vintage? Man, I'm aging quickly. But I suppose it has to be vintage at some point.

The Ludwig hammered bronze Supraphonic is one of the best sounding and versatile drums I've ever played. There's a bunch of good snare drums to choose from though from several companies. For my money it's the hammered bronze.

Too many great drums to list here!

Okay Brian, at least you acknowledge that "best" is highly subjective (this is like asking us what's the best car ever made), but since you didn't qualify "best", I'll submit this...

1. Best looking snare (this one or just about anything else in Mike C's collection):

2. Best designed snare (the Gladstone):

3. Now for the best sounding snare, since I personally don't like snare shells that ring, I'm ruling out all steel, bronze, and brass snares (even my beloved COB Dyna's) in favor of the wood shell Dynasonic (might even beat the Gladstone for best design):

My :2Cents: Any dissension? Any agreement?

Mike

Hard to disagree with Mikes submissions... I also would concur that a wood shell would need to be the contender here..

Cheers

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

This topic is all in the "ear of the beholder" and to the eye to some degree and i agree about the Dynasonic being the best designed snare drum ever made inspite of the rare lovelys that are out there. But i do have to say that my personal fav is the Sonor HLD 590 snare and yes 1980 is vintage(35 yrs) of existence, that`s like comparing 1955 to 1920,so i think it does qualify in the vintage dept..
