Best reso head for my 22" ludwig?

Hey folks.. Just had a question regarding bass drum resonant heads..

I'm currently using a Remo powerstroke 3 smooth reso head for my vintage 6 ply, made in USA b/w badge 22x14 Ludwig kick, coupled with the new powerstroke 3 black dot clear on batter.. I thought that if i combined these two heads with a felt strip on the reso side, i would not need any dampening inside the kick, but still maintain a nice attack, thud, with just enough low end..

What i find now is that i'm not getting the resonance i want, and the kick doesn't really project that well..

i know it'a all subjective, but what type of head would be a better solution to rectify the problem.?. I'm thinking of switching back to a powerstroke 3 coated on the batter, and maybe combining an ambassador or emperor coated with a felt strip on the resonant side.. Any other suggestions/combos would be appreciated..

cheers,

Rob

I have good luck using a smooth Powerstroke 3 for my batter and an Evans smooth white EQ3 Resonate head with a hole on the front. I play it wide open in unmiked situations. In miked situations I use an Evans EQ pillow inside. On a few of my other kits I still use the PS3 for batter and a coated Remo ambassador on the front. I use a 2" felt strip. No hole in front. I only use this combo if the gig is unmiked. I have one 20" 3 ply Ludwig bass drum that I get a nice sound using the Ambassador without the felt strip. It'the only one that has worked on though. Hope some of this helps you.

Thanks Jerry, it does help and gives me an idea as to what possible combos i can use.. I usually have no hole in my reso head and mic my kick, but i still want a fat punch with plenty of low end..I'm gonna try a vintage Emperor Coated with a felt strip and see what that sounds like..

Thanks for you input !

cheers,

Rob
