Are these early or late 70's Ludwigs?

Loading...

Hi all, need some help. I just picked up my first vintage AND first Ludwig set! :D It's a nice pearl/off white hollywood style 5 piece 12", 13", 16", 22" in pretty good shape.

The guy I got them from was the 2nd owner. He said the original owner said he got them new in '76. From my research, the serial numbers (1506XXX) seem to date '78 or '79. The hardware (kick spurs, tom mounts/holders, tom arm) and construction (3 ply with re-rings) seem to be from the early 70's...? The badges look about mid to late 70's. The guy said everything is original including the heads and i'm inclined to believe him.

Was this old stock that was sold later in the 70's or something?

Here's the original CL ad and a serial number pic I took. Sorry, his pics are a little blurry. I haven't had time to get any better ones yet. :P

Pointed corners I believe are early to mid-ish! Some one will be along that can say 100%.

The switch to six ply was arounD 1976. This set could have very well been bought new in 1976 and maybe built in 1975 or earlier. Those silk finishes made its first appearance in the 1973 catalog. Looks like you got a nice deal!

Thanks for the help guys. I'm really stoked on these. Yeah, the silk wrap is pretty sweet. It's coming unglued some at the seams, but not too bad. I can't believe it still has the original calf skin batters and resos- very cool. I just picked up a late 70's 5x14 Supra to go with these too. I know what i'm doing this weekend! D' Drummer

The only thing that bugs me about these drums is the rust and grime. I'd love to take everything apart to clean and polish it, but don't have the time. What does it cost to have a set like this restored? I guess it depends on the shop and how dirty the drums are...
