Are drum finish preferences regional?

I started that Citrus Mod thread and then noticed that Mikey said he knew of several sets in California. That made me wonder if the "mod" colors were preferred by the West coasters contingent of drummers -as opposed to possibly more "old school" colors preferred by East coasters. It's just that when I think of California of the 60's and 70's, I always think of brighter colors, the beach, brightly painted hotrods, polka dot bikinis...etc. Whereas the East coast seems like a place for WMP and more "business-like" colors.

I think Ludwig had the widest variety of finishes of any of the big companies. They originated in midwest....but do you think there was any specific markets or regions more focused upon for certain finishes like Citrus Mod, Mod Orange and Psych Red? In other words, do you think the greater portion of those extra bright colors went to dealers on the West coast or the East coast? Or, were they equally distributed? What's your guess?

It seems like it would have been a simple question of "supply and demand" yet it more than likely wasn't.

I find it very interesting that some of the least desired wraps of the 60s are now some of the most desired by today's vintage drum collectors.

In response to "what's my guess", I feel that the West Coast dealers more than likely did receive more of the bright "mod" colors than the midwestern dealers.

On a separate issue, I'd vote for polka-dot bikinis regardless of which area of the country they're worn!Cool1

And I agree. I always used to see the more mod colors here on the West coast. You go a couple states east and all you saw in those days was various glitters (blue, silver and gold I seem to remember) and pearls. None of the WOW stuff. When I was playing my Standards back in the day, the locals didn't say a word about their Avocado Strata wrap. I don't remember running into anyone from the East coast, but some from the mid West or mid America would look at them and gag... Or maybe it was me.

I would say the Mod colors seen to be more on the west coast and mid-west states,i would also say the old school colors are more on the east coast than the west..But then again its only guessing..Mikey

To an extent I think so,and then some trends reached different places at different times .I was in the custom clothing industry for a while, and black suits became popular, before then the only time you saw a black suit in the south was on a preacher or undertaker, however they were worn by people in large cities who were in the entertainment and related industries. In most places a banker or people in finance would wear charcoal grey, although in New England a Teal suit was used very often by people in high Finance. Some trends start on the west coast,go to the east coast next and then work their way into the heart land.I was talking to Joe at Eames drums in the mid 90's and he said he would still get orders for concert toms, and they always came from the midwest.

I've always heard that the least popular colors ended up the furthest away from the main buying centers of NYC and Chicago. Oyster Black Pearl was very unpopular before Ringo, which is possibly why it was sitting in music shop over in England!

There was a music store in Detroit that kept a green sparkle Gretsch set in their window for years, and also sold a number of green sparkle Gretsch sets. I know of four Gretsch green sparkle sets that have been for sale, and all came from the Detroit area. But it is almost impossible to find the color anywhere else.

Thanks,

Bill
