I know they're not vintage but at Guitar Center recently I tried a Gretsch Catalina Maple 7 piece kit on display - I was surprised how nice it sounded!
Anyone else tried them?

I played one yesterday - a store demo. They were clean sounding, response was good, but certainly not in any way "That Great Gretsch Sound" we know and love. PDP maple kits I've played impressed me much more than the Catalinas, and I believe the PDP outfits are much better constructed. In fact, I'd go as far as to choose PDP kits as the most underrated drums of all in today's import market.
