I remember seeing John Densmore play a red Gretsch on "Fast Times" in the 80's. That "new wave" tv series with Moon Zappa playing a valley girl.
Anyone see John Densmore on Jimmy Fallen?

And thus is the nature of being in a full time band. It's one of the reasons I left playing: I got tired of working with people with no work ethic and giant egos.

Late night TV existed before Johnny and continues since his departure, there is no question he reinvented - and in many ways created the genre. He is undoubtedly the king! He brought a certain class while remaining creative, funny irreverent, and racy. He could communicate volumes with a smile, a smirk, a hand gesture (golf swing), or just the twinkle in his eye. With that said, I am addicted to late night TV so I watch all the shows except Letterman. I used to watch Letterman religiously when he was on after Carson but in the last few years he's become stale, repetitive, bitter, and highly political - all things Johnny never did. There have been a lot of great drummers on late night TV - Shelly Manne, Ed Shaughnessy, Louie Bellson, Steve Jordan, Anton Fig, Max Weinberg, Questlove, etc.And you get to see them every night. In addition often good guest bands.
And Carson himself had some chops right? Wasn't he a drummer. I believe there's a video (possibly a thread) on DVD some where.
Click on the MEDIA tab and give the videos a look... first one is called "Being a drummer is like being a plumber. Gold sparkle keystone club dates in that clip.
Interesting clip on the Dennis Miller show... he does a reading from his first book.

I'm a huge John Densmore fan. He played Ludwig kits....💀
Regarding the kits, I think all has been said here.
I never heard about Morrison hating Densmore, tho. In fact, I've heard only the exact opposite. I have Densmore's book and he describes his relationship with Morrison as very complicated, but I don't think they really hated each other.
As for playing, Densmore never was a flamboyant drummer, but I think he is a genius of simplicity. He always plays EXACTLY what fits there, right on the nail. I've loved his drumming ever since I first heard it.

Wow, "genius of simplicity". I love that! And I'm going to use that unless you have a copywrite. I have always been a huge fan of drummers who play what should be played rather than showing off what they can play. Densmore's contemporaries Ringo and Charlie Watts come to mind. I agree that Densmore (and Ringo and Charlie) thoughtfully played what was appropriate, what "fit", rather than steal the show with "watch-what-I-can-do" fills.

Densmore was a huge influence on me during my early years of playing drums. Ive always loved the jazz flavor that he brought to the Doors! I always try to keep things simple. Playing simple has gotten me lots of gigs in my area! I dig that "genius of simplicity" comment. I think ill use that one too!! Walking
