Any Old American Companies w/ Vertical Grain Shells?

Loading...

A friend of mine has an old snare shell with wood hoops. Someone had painted it. The wood grain inside is vertical like a Japanese shell. I had thought this old drum was an old Leedy snare. Were there any American companies that would have done their shells this way? I know pics would help but I forgot and the drum is at my friends.

Thanks

usually, no. there are exceptions though. ive got an early 7x11 Ludwig drum that has vertical grain. after I bought it, I started searching pics of more drums and found a handful of like examples. mine has wooden hoops with double inlays and center dual tension zephyr lugs. mine also has a paper label as a badge. 30's if I remember correctly.

i'll see if I can dig up a pic when I can..

found a before of the drum itself. no interior pic though. didn't have a tacked reso like you would think. the hoop had been off for a long time and was/is out of round. dual factory mufflers too.

also found mention of a 40's gretsch 16" with vertical grain interior.
