Another really old juvenile drum Last viewed: 6 hours ago

I bought this old juvenile drum from a fellow forum member. I paid way more than I wanted to, but the drum is one very similar to one I had been looking for. The one I wanted to get is a 10" diameter drum. This one is the next size larger at 12". But this one is extremely complete. The only thing missing is the strap, but the deal included a pair of very unusual drum sticks as well as the original, ornate tuning key. The drum is complete with FIVE (it's not missing one!) t-rods and there are corresponding marks on the hoops used to space them correctly. I thought it might be a Wurlitzer drum, but on second thought, I think it may have been a drum made for mail order catalog sales and left un-labled, as such. If anyone knows the brand of this drum, then I would really appreciate knowing for sure.

The shell is tin and the outside is polished. It's essentially made the same way that an old coffee can would have been made! Snare beds are present. The seam is soldered with lead. The drum is absolutely void of any identifying marks. The solid maple hoops are stained to look like rosewood.

I'm thinking it's probably around 100 years old! Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Another nice one, man !!!

Maybe that ornate drum key could help date the snare?

You have really developed a niche market for yourself regarding juvenile drums.

How big is the list now?

Could you re-post the juvenile kit, or kits, (I can't remember) that you have as well some time?

Thanks

Kev

The lug claws look similar to my 1925 Wilson drum. Wilson made drums from 1915-28. I got this key from David on this Forum..........thanks again!

I like your drum! Nice piece of drum history....

Yes, there are definite similarities, Gary. However, I think your Wilson drum is a real drum. I see the riveted seam of your drum and my guess is that yours is not tin.

But I do agree that the tension rods and claws are the same. The rims look like they were made the same exact way, too.

Mine may be a copy modeled after the look of your Wilson drum, but I'm sure the shells are quite different.

Cool drum, btw!! Thanks for sharing!flowers2

Thanks, man. Yeah, I needed to switch to collecting something smaller and more affordable than drum sets! These little drums are just for fun and historical review. They're definitely not serious instruments...but they are VERY serious toys! lol! ;)

Gary, Notice on your Wilson drum how the two beads on the shell are outward (convex)? The beads on my shell are inward (concave).
