Another mystery snare! Slingerland? Last viewed: 6 hours ago

I helped a friend with a kit this week and he gave me this snare. It came to me with most lugs busted. Most of the lugs are what i think are MIJ Slingerland copies and one is a pearl battleship lug. It was recovered with blue macktack with no sign of the original wrap. I took one look & thought it was MIJ, but then when I got home and removed the hardware I found this shell underneath that is not made of lauan & looks like maple or birch with the grain running horizontally. I quickly realized that the lug screws are all different so probably not original. I started digging around the net and I think this could be 3 ply Slingerland from the 70's.

While writing this I realized that I should try screwing US and MIJ rods into the lug inserts and it turns out that the US threaded ones work. So are these Slingerland lugs?

The hole pattern for the strainer, extended butt-end, "stick-killer rims" (not pictured) and blue ink where a stamp would have been all seem to add up to Slingerland. So any thoughts are welcome!

Once I know what I have I think I'll grab some parts and make a player snare from this one.

And it shouldnt have "stick killer" hoops, if by that you mean double flanged Radio King hoops. Should have rounded over Sound King hoops.

Yup - Slinger all the way. The shell is indicative. I have never seen a butt like that on an MIJ. The holes for the strainer seem to suggest a Zoomatic. That should turn out to sound great.

and another thing - you know how to tell the difference between MIJ lugs and Slinger lugs right? The MIJs can lay right down flat as everything is flush on the belly. The Slingerlands have the threaded posts that are longer which prevents it from laying flat on the belly. Lug inserts can always be changed out, but the lug posts will always be a reliable indicator.
