Another BDP Rogers Luxor

Christmas present?x-mas2x-mas1:Snow Flake:

For my son? I didn't hold back this time. :( Unfortunately, now I'm going to have to start looking for a matching Rogers BDP kit to go with the snare. Hmmmm .... maybe a 22/13/16 Tower in BDP.

I'm gonna be in the dog house. I did use the "drums are more than just musical instruments, they are actually works of art" line last night. "Vintage drums are just going to get harder and harder to find, so now is the time to purchase." might be another good line.

Thanks DanC. Your collection is outstanding. If this is just your Luxor's, I can't imagine what else you have stacked, on display and setup. Mind BlowiWhat heads do you like? The original Rogers head is in very good condition, so I might keep it on the drum. This is a one owner drum and I am guessing the heads have never been removed. If I turn the tag upside down it looks like the hand written number is "12 65". Does this correspond with it having the "S/N 10000"? It might be an "R 65".If it is "12 65", then maybe this could help with the serial number timeline.- Tim

I meant the 12-65 inside..Dec 65?

Also,they did not make a 22,13,16 Tower...............

12/65 is probably the date the drum came home when new, and that makes sense with the serial number.

Normal Ambassador weight heads top and bottom are the closest to the original and work well on those drums.

The Tower bass was offered in sizes up to 28" ! And the Tower ride tom was available as a 12" or 13", but the only floor tom was a 14x14, there were no 16" Tower floor toms in any catalog.

This leaves the possibility of a 28-12-14 Tower kit out there. Not likely! But I have seen a 22" Tower bass and 13" ride tom over the years, as singles. Extremely scarce, they are. Most Tower sets were sold as entry-level kits for beginners etc, and the buyers (usually the parents) didn't want the bigger sizes and didn't want to spend the extra money anyway.

I have a 22" Tower shell here and most of the parts to complete...

Someone took it to a shop, and had a old Mike Portnoy style fade finish put on it...........nice job

Same on the 13 Tower and 16 P-Tone FT.

Need to flip these soon...........

PS........I had a B and B Tower 26" BD a few years ago...........

Pulled the drum apart today. It's really clean. The Rogers head is a replacement. There's a price of $1.00 written on the side ring. It's also missing 4 tension washers. Other than these things, the drum is complete. The wrap is not faded and has only a couple of light scratches. I put a couple coats of wax on the shell and it shines like new. The chrome is perfect., except for a couple very small rust spots on the hoops.

The Rogers batter head was really dirty, but still in good shape. I took a Magic Eraser and some Oxy-clean and lightly cleaned the head. I made sure I didn't rub too hard, because it would have started to remove the coating. It looks really good now and I'm going to use it.

Here are some after pictures. Even one with the Olympic snare stand that came with the drum. This drum really shines for being 47 years old.

When people say "low/medium/high" tuning, isn't this all relative to the type/make of drum?

Has anyone ever taken a DrumDial reading that can be associated with a "low/medium/high" tuning? Right now I have the batter head around an 85-90 on the DrumDial. It's not completely choking the drum, but still gives a nice crack and decent stick rebound. My son hasn't warmed up to it just yet. He's stuck on his Gretsch 4165 at the moment.

87-8 on top and around 85 on the bottom are good all-purpose numbers on that drum (and many others as well ;) ).
