An Intro and My Latest kit Last viewed: 5 seconds ago

Hi all,

I come from a few other forums but now that i've joined the vintage world with my latest acquisition, i'll be visiting here more often. I do have a 67 Blue Oyster Pearl kit that my dad bought new in 67 and then sold to my uncle. I bought it from my uncle a few years ago but i don't gig with it so never thought of myself as a "vintage" guy until i purchased a Camco kit.

I havent received yet so I'm hoping the shipping gods are kind.

Apparently this kit has a lot of history. The guy I bought it from was a drummer and provided back line kits in LA in the 70's. Apparently he was asked to supply a kit for Charlie Watts and he brought along one of his personal Gretsch kits. The one Charlie's been playing ever since. I spoke to this guy for quite some time and he seemed very knowledgeable and legit. Very interesting guy!

This kit I bought was played by a lot of famous drummers from that era, Mick Fleetwood being one of them. It's a 69 Camco Oaklawn, 24, which i was also told is pretty rare, 13 and 16. Not my sizes but I couldn't pass it up for the price I paid! The badges are on the kit but not shown on this pic. I was nervous about making the deal as it was from Craigslist and across the border. I talked to the guy personally before buying it. Man I hope I haven't been scammed. If I was, the guy was ultra smooth......

I was so nervous i was being scammed that i checked out the guys Facebook, verified the area code i called was from Cody and then saw the kit on his Facebook. He posted the kit for sale on his Facebook back in march and had the kit on craigslist for a month at a really good price so that made me suspicious that it hadn't moved yet.

We're even entertaining meeting half way at the border to pick up the kit, but it's about 800miles return for the both of us, so i'm not sure if that will happen. THe guy is extremely interesting and i'd love a chance to visit and talk drums with him if i had the chance

This is some info on the kit from his Facebook...

Drummer alert!

I am finally ready to part with my old road partner 1969 Camco drumset. These drums were originally owned by Martha and the Vandellas (if you're under 40 you may not care about that) I acquired them in '78 from a LA recording studio. This kit has been all over the US (even Aruba!) and toured with West for 8+ years. The Toms and Bass are for sure April '69 vintage with a 6.5 Ludwig snare, Rogers Swiv-o-matic hi hat and Caroline BPedal. Jimmie Fadden from Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's signature is inside shell of the ride tom (see under 40 above). It's kinda like buyin' a museum! (Albeit, a rather small one)

Oh ya, the guy i bought the kit from supposedly worked in LA in the 70's providing back line kits. Charlie Watts needed a kit and this guy brought his own personal Gretsch kit for Charlie to use on and Charlie ended up buying it and has used it ever since with the Stones......

Welcome! Thanks for sharing the story. Nice kit!

Thanks Gravy!

Geta gig in Innisfail yet? I hope I can get comfortable on this kit being as its 7"s from my normal config. (take 4" off the the bass drum and 3" of the tom and it would be perfect).

I always ride a shallow 10" over a 20 or 22 and have the angle fairly flat. To get this Tom low and at the same angle, I'll need to snare stand mount to the left of the bass which will spread my legs out. My floor Tom is always in tight so from experience, it'll be quite close to being positioned over the bass pedal. I bought a vector bass pedal to help make it as close to how comfortable I am on my regular kits. I'm hoping the sound of the kit will help get over the change

Hey Manicotti! Welcome to VDF.

Once you get the ergonomics worked out, the sound of those drums is going to make all the hassle well worth the trouble. The tuning range on those drums is amazing and the sound even more so. I have a set of 4-ply Oaklawns (orphans I rewrapped,) and it is bar none, the best sounding set of drums I have ever played. Deep, rich, warm, all the good adjectives. You'll get hooked.

Enjoy the kit. Good to see you posting here...

John

Too many great drums to list here!

Haha, I bet you think I'm Gravy from Drumsmith. I'm Gravy! (with exclamation point) over there. I'm mellotron on Drumforum. I used to be Gravy_Foot way back on Harry Cangany's old forum. When I started playing again, DFO wouldn't let me log in as my former self (Gravy!) so that's why I'm not Gravy! over there. Who's on First?

Sorry about the hijack.

Anyway, looking forward to your take on the Camco's. I sure we'll be bidding against each other in a future Camco auction! guitar3

Well now, welcome to the world of Camco... Yep, these are indeed wonderful drums... Your kit may not have ever had badges. Mine didn't as far as I can tell. I got these in the mid 80's and have played 'em a lot. There is no indication they ever had badges on any of the shells. I've never had a Camco snare.

Sizes are 13, 14, 16, 18, 24... LA I believe. See my site, in the sig for more pic's of this kit.
