Alternatives to Ludwig Supraphonics? Last viewed: 2 minutes ago

Loading...

How about the Pearl Ian Paice snare drum. Went to a drum clinic featuring Ian,he told the crowd that Pearl was sick of seeing him behind their drums with a Ludwig Supraphonic between his legs. So Pearl made him a snare that they said was VERY comparable to the Supraphonic.I myself owned one of these snare drums, and I can tell you right now,it dosent sound like a Supraphonic to me,not even close. But thats just me.

From Hoppy

Guess that Ford X2 aka "snare 11" didn't generate much interest huh?

Yeah it did! I just didn't want to hijack the thread.

When I first saw it I lol'd for some time...

Do ya feel like a 'big wheel' when you whack that snare? Staying in the groove and rolls take on whole new meanings!

I can think of more stuff, but it just gets worse...

BTW: Acrolite's are one of my workhorses... Hard to 'beat' a Supraphonic though.

I'll take my Sonor ferro-manganese 14x5.75 phonic snare over a supra any day.

Unless of course someone gave me a supersensitive. I've always wanted one of those...

+1 for the Acrolite. I love mine -- just a perfect metal snare.

I'll also chime in for the Premier 2000, which is a really top-notch drum, and I'll echo jonnistix's comment on the oft-overlooked Tama King Beat. They threw in a King Beat when I bought my Gretsch kit years ago, and it's one of the most amazing snare drums I've ever played. People tend to underestimate them because they're Tamas, but they're fantastic.

Kits:
1950s Gretsch Name Band in Midnight Blue Pearl (13/16/22/14sn)
1965/66 Ludwig Club Dates rewrapped in Black Diamond Pearl (12/15/20)

I have a supraphonic and a Gretsch 4160 COB from the late 60s. They sound very similar. Both are sensitive and very crisp. However, the die cast hoops on the Gretsch are much better for rim shots. I think the Gretsch typically sells for about $100 more condition being equal.

I share the opinion that the Supra has its own sound. However, Im also of the opinion that there are quite a few metal snares that have an equally awesome sound. Never thought you had to have a COB to have a great sound. Its all in the ear of the player I guess. I still play one butt ugly 5x14 Supra thats pitted all over with huge patches of chrome missing. And wouldnt trade it for the world. Its got the sound I want. Maybe thats the key...find the one YOU want.
